The aftermath of battle left the air thick
with the scent of blood and burning
flesh. The village, once a hollow ruin, now
bore the scars of conflict-charred
remains of buildings, corpses strewn like
discarded pawns, and the faint echoes of
dying screams still lingering in the wind,
Zhen Yang stood atop the highest point,
his crimson gaze surveying the
destruction with cold detachment. The
enemy had been crushed, their resistance
shattered like brittle glass beneath his
grasp. Yet, in victory, he found no
satisfaction-only the quiet hum of
inevitabilityKaia limped through the wreckage, her armor stained with blood, her body screaming in protest with every step. Despite the pain, her focus remained
unwavering as she approached Zhen
Yang
"My lord," she said, her voice laced with
exhaustion. "The remaining enemy forces
have been executed. None were spared
Zhen Yang turned slightly, his expression
unreadable. "And the survivors on our
side?"
Kaia hesitated before responding
"Seventeen men remain from the
detachment. We lost more than half."
Zhen Yang's eyes narrowed "Acceptable
losses" Kaia's grip on her sword tightened. "Was it worth it?"
He met her gaze, his expression devoid
of emotion. "Every move serves a
purpose. We secured victory, instilled
fear in those who watch from the
shadows, and demonstrated that betrayal
carries a price.
Kaia exhaled slowly, forcing down the
frustration burning in her chest. She
knew arguing was futile-Zhen Yang saw
the world not in terms of human cost, but
in calculations and consequences
A soldier approached, bowing before
them. "My lord, we found something."
Zhen Yang raised a brow. "Show me."The soldier led them to a hidden chamber
beneath the village's temple ruins. Inside,
the air was damp, the scent of rot
mingling with something far more
unnatural.
In the center of the chamber lay a circle
of withered corpses, their faces frozen in
expressions of eternal agony. Dark runes
pulsated along the stone walls, their glow
eerily familiar.
Kaia shivered. "Dark magic.
Zhen Yang stepped forward, his fingers
brushing against the ancient symbols. A
pulse of energy surged through his veins,
recognition flashing in his eyes.
"This isn't just dark magic," he murmured
"It's a summoning ritual."Kaia stiffened. "Summoning what?"
Zhen Yang's lips curled into a smirk.
"Something desperate. Something
dangerous.
Before Kaia could respond, a deep
guttural growl rumbled through the
chamber, sending chills down their
spines. The runes flared brighter, casting
monstrous shadows against the walls.
Zhen Yang exhaled in amusement. "It
seems we've awakened something."
Kaia stepped back, drawing her sword
instinctively. "My lord, we should leave-
The chamber trembled violently, and from
the darkness, something began to stir."Leave? No, Kaia. This is exactly what I
wanted.
