Not concerned?

Hearing Mike's casual tone, the officers were somewhat surprised.

Oliver waved his hand and said, "Wait here, I'll handle the paperwork for you."

At the same time, he planned to check Mike's background and confirm his family situation.

Mike waited quietly with Gwen.

A short while later, Oliver returned with a smile.

Mike's background was clean—he had only one adopted child, who was already an adult.

Although he was single, he was also quite wealthy.

No wonder he didn't care about George's inheritance.

What surprised Oliver, however, was that according to the records, Mike was already over fifty.

Yet, looking at him, aside from the silver strands at his temples—which seemed almost intentionally dyed—he didn't appear to be in his fifties at all.

Curious, Oliver looked at Mike and couldn't help but ask, "Mike, you're over fifty?"

As soon as he said this, all the officers in the room turned to look at Mike in unison, their eyes filled with astonishment.

Mike's mouth twitched slightly, but he nodded.

Immediately, murmurs of amazement spread through the room. Two female officers, in particular, exchanged glances, their eyes flashing as they secretly decided to ask Mike about his skincare routine later.

You all really think I've got some kind of special effects going on…

Mike silently complained to himself.

Oliver continued, "There are no issues on your end. You're cleared to adopt Gwen. I'll bring the official adoption papers to your home after George's funeral."

Mike had no objections. Instead, he asked, "When is the funeral?"

He would have to bring Gwen to attend.

Oliver pondered for a moment before replying, "The day after tomorrow."

Mike nodded. "If there's nothing else, I'll take Gwen home now."

The officers nodded in agreement. At the same time, the two female officers spoke in unison, "I'll escort them out!"

As they reached the station's entrance, the two female officers couldn't hold back any longer. In hushed voices, they asked, "Mr. Kent, how do you stay so youthful?"

"Youthful?" Mike raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Plenty of sunlight."

With that, he turned and walked away with Gwen, leaving behind the two officers rolling their eyes.

---

George Stacy was given a hero's funeral.

But no matter how much honor one receives after death, the reality remains the same—the person is gone.

He had been a diligent and responsible officer, well-liked among his colleagues.

On the day of the funeral, Mike brought Gwen to attend, allowing her to say her final farewell to her father.

Before leaving, Mike also received Gwen's adoption papers from Oliver, along with an envelope.

The moment he took the adoption papers, a familiar voice echoed in his mind.

Glancing at the system interface, Mike chuckled.

So the system only confirmed Gwen as his daughter after he officially received the adoption papers? It sure had a sense of formality.

But…

Gwen Kent?

Her last name had changed?

Slightly puzzled, he looked at the adoption papers. Sure enough, the name matched what was displayed in the system—Gwen Kent.

Did Oliver change it?

Mike wondered to himself but didn't dwell on it. He carefully put away the documents, took Gwen's hand, and left the funeral.

---

After getting into the car, Gwen sat in the backseat while Mike opened the envelope to check its contents.

Inside, there were some keys and inheritance documents.

He figured he should take Gwen back to her old home and see if she wanted to retrieve anything.

Having made up his mind, Mike glanced at the address and drove toward Gwen's house.

He expected her, being so young, to pack many things. But to his surprise, she only took a single photograph before asking Mike to lock the door.

It seemed she wouldn't be coming back for a long time.

Mike handed her the keys.

But Gwen shook her head and pushed them back to him. "I'll just lose them."

"Then I'll give them to you when you grow up."

Gwen nodded.

She was only six years old, yet she had already been through so much. Her maturity made Mike's heart ache.

After buying Gwen some clothes and daily necessities, Mike took her home.

"Gwen, this is your room."

Mike led her into a bedroom and placed her new belongings inside. Gwen looked around at the thoughtfully decorated, adorably cozy room, and for the first time, a smile appeared on her face.

She hadn't even noticed when he set it all up.

"Unc… I'll put my things away myself."

Gwen spoke softly, holding the clothes Mike had bought her.

She didn't know how to address him.

Mike paused for a moment, then gently patted her head. "Alright. What do you want for lunch?"

"Anything is fine."

Gwen was still a little reserved.

Even after spending a few days with Mike, she remained polite and distant.

It was understandable. She was young but already very perceptive. Adjusting to a new home so quickly wasn't easy.

Mike understood this well, so he wasn't in a rush. Though, deep down, he couldn't deny how much he wanted to hear Gwen call him "Dad."

"I'll go make dinner."

With that, Mike turned and headed to the kitchen.

Having a little one in the house suddenly made cooking much more enjoyable.

Smiling, he decided to make a few of Gwen's favorite dishes.

She hadn't explicitly told him what she liked, but after spending the past few days together, Mike had picked up on her preferences.

To his delight, Gwen seemed to love Chinese food. Even when given a choice between Western and Chinese cuisine, she always leaned toward the latter.

Hah, guess the saying is true—"A family is drawn together by fate."

Mike chuckled to himself.

As he was stir-frying, Gwen quietly finished organizing her things and carefully tiptoed to the kitchen doorway. Watching Mike cook, she smiled. But when he turned toward her, she quickly hid behind the wall.

Mike couldn't help but laugh.

Hearing him, Gwen peeked out again and asked in a small voice, "Can I help with anything?"

Mike was about to tell her there was no need, but when he saw the eager look in her eyes, he picked up a few cloves of garlic and handed them to her. "Here, can you peel these for me?"

Gwen beamed with joy, happily taking the garlic. She walked over to the trash bin, peeling the cloves while sneaking glances at the dishes Mike was cooking. Occasionally, she licked her lips in anticipation.

A short while later, Mike brought the food to the table, and Gwen helped set out the utensils.

Seeing her eat so happily, Mike felt completely satisfied.

After dinner, Mike asked, "Gwen, do you want to go back to school tomorrow?"

Gwen thought for a moment, then nodded.

She had already missed several days.

"Alright. I'll take you to school tomorrow. You'll be going back to your old one."

Hearing that, Gwen smiled.
