At ten o'clock in the morning, Edward Harper changed into a set of casual, low-key clothes, and followed the map given by the director to the emergency passage, unimpeded all the way.
He silenced his phone, isolating himself from all outside disturbances, determined to stay with her, regardless of the outcome.
Walking through the cold corridor, he climbed the stairs to the nineteenth floor on foot, where her ICU ward was located.
When he emerged from the stairwell and pushed open the door, it was as if he had stepped into the door of life and death, his heart leaping into his throat.
To his surprise, the area outside the ICU was eerily quiet, with no sign of human presence.
He stepped forward, each footfall echoing on the floor.
This floor contained only one ICU, a special service ward generally not reached by ordinary patients in need of rescue. Evidently, the person protecting her had a strong background, able to arrange for her to be placed here.
