Beep beep beep...
Fu Chenlie hung up the phone.
She was speechless!
Wen Ran looked at Jiang Yan with a puzzled expression, "Ah Yan, how can there be such people in the world? Not a bit of politeness, and they don't even finish their sentences."
Saying that, she stood up, "Anyway, Grandma wants me to go to the Fu family estate, I have to go!"
Jiang Yan grabbed her leg, "Ranran, I heard you just report the address, is it possible that Mr. Fu plans to come pick you up? If you leave now and he does come, wouldn't he have made a wasted trip?"
"How could I have that much face?"
"Your face may be small, but what if he's coming to pick you up to save face for Granny Fu? If he married you because of Granny Fu, then he has to show some care for you in front of Grandma, and picking you up is just one of the ways he might fake it."
Wen Ran sat back down on the bed, "What you're saying seems to make some sense."
"Mhm, just wait here then, maybe Mr. Fu will arrive soon and give you another call."
"Alright, since he didn't make himself clear, if he doesn't come, I'll just take a taxi to the Fu Residence. It won't be my fault if I'm late."
Jiang Yan agreed, "Right."
The two continued to peruse job listing websites while lying on the bed.
About fifteen minutes later, Wen Ran's phone rang again.
"He really called me again..." Wen Ran said.
Jiang Yan got up from the bed, "I'll go to the window and see if he's downstairs."
Wen Ran had already answered the call, and Jiang Yan stood at the window looking down to see, indeed, there was a luxury car completely out of place in this area!
She frantically nodded at Wen Ran, signaling that Fu Chenlie had arrived.
Wen Ran also got off the bed, gave her an ok sign to indicate she understood, and knowingly asked on the phone, "Mr. Fu, what's up?"
Fu Chenlie's voice sounded commanding, "Come downstairs."
Two words, crisp and to the point.
"Oh, okay, I'll be right down, thankful..."
Before she could finish saying "thankful," the "beep beep beep" sound was already in her ear again.
Could he be any ruder?!
She really could say thanks.
Wen Ran headed to the entryway to put on her shoes while saying to Jiang Yan, "Ah Yan, I'm leaving now, let's keep in touch through WeChat."
"Sure, take care and don't trip."
"If I take my time, Fu Chen will kill me!"
With that, she opened the door and dashed out.
When Wen Ran got downstairs, she saw a strange man standing by the car, and her pace involuntarily hesitated.
The man stepped forward with a smile, "Madam, I am Mr. Fu's assistant, Cheng Cheng."
She nodded, "Assistant Cheng, nice to meet you."
Cheng Cheng smiled, not expecting Madam to be so polite.
He opened the car door, "Madam, please get in."
Wen Ran glanced at the inside of the car.
Fu Chen sat up straight, hands on his knees, eyes fixed somewhere—not on her—the silence inside was terrifying, like the calm before a storm.
"Madam, please get in the car?" Cheng Cheng urged again.
She got into the car with a resigned heart, sitting close to the door, eyes fixed on the scenery outside the window, as if by being farther from Fu Chen, he wouldn't be able to see her.
Fortunately, he didn't bother her on the journey.
When they arrived at the Fu Residence, both of them got out of the car.
Wen Ran followed behind Fu Chen, ready to enter the house with the demeanor of a "little brother."
But unexpectedly, the man's steps suddenly halted.
Unprepared, she bumped into his shoulder.
There was a fresh and clean scent on Fu Chen's clothes, pleasant and familiar.
As Wen Ran was trying to identify the scent, she heard him speak coolly, "Listen up, don't you dare say a bad word about me in front of Grandma. If you cause me trouble with Grandma because of something you said, I will make you pay back double."
