Chapter 7: High-end Hunters Often Appear as Prey

Su Meixi glanced at Qi Anran and then at Han Ningzhen; she was almost laughing out of fury, "Are you guys done or not? I've said it already, if you want me to pay, let's call the traffic police. Whatever amount they say I owe, that's what I'll pay."

Han Ningzhen walked over, sneered, and said, "Su Meixi, just how poor are you? Do you really need to pinch pennies over 2000 yuan? Or are you using this as an excuse to get close to my boyfriend?"

"Me, get close to him? What a joke! He's trash; someone else picking him up would be doing me a favor!"

Qi Anran's face turned dark upon hearing Su Meixi's words.

He probably didn't want to entangle with Su Meixi any longer and said to Han Ningzhen, "Ningzhen, what if we just forget it? Can we consider the 2000 yuan as dog food?"

"No way!" Han Ningzhen said, "Are you that rich? You can simply let go of 2000 yuan? Don't forget, the money for your car was scraped together from selling the orchard in the countryside by your mother."

Qi Anran looked extremely upset, but he did not dare to explode; he did not want to offend Han Ningzhen.

Seeing his pathetic demeanor, Su Meixi couldn't stand it any longer.

She took out her mobile phone and said, "Fine, I'll pay you the money; consider these 2000 yuan as feeding a dog, a bootlicker who flatters this person today and that person tomorrow, forever a dog."

Qi Anran dared not vent his anger on Han Ningzhen but directed it onto Su Meixi instead, "What did you say? Say it again!"

"I said you're a bootlicker—not once, but three times: bootlicker, bootlicker, bootlicker…"

Just as Qi Anran seemed ready to get physical, his hand was suddenly grasped by someone.

Not only grasped but also thrown back, so Qi Anran landed in the nearby flower bed.

He looked up in disbelief at the person before him.

It was Gu Wei again!

How could he be so strong?

Su Meixi breathed a sigh of relief seeing Gu Wei, and her confidence increased significantly.

Gu Wei took out his wallet, pulled out 2000 yuan cash, and tossed it onto Qi Anran's face, then said coldly, "From now on, stop bothering her. If there's a next time, I'll see you in court!"

With that, he hopped onto Su Meixi's electric scooter as he did the day before.

Su Meixi: "…"

Well, better just drive off.

On the ground, Qi Anran was like an idiot.

He stared at the scattered bills but didn't know whether to pick them up.

All he could think was: Who is that man?

Han Ningzhen was also quite unhappy.

She had thought Qi Anran was good-looking, 178 centimeters tall, not short, fair-skinned, with handsome features. However, when Gu Wei appeared, Han Ningzhen's gaze was involuntarily drawn to him.

Not only was Gu Wei tall and broad, but he also carried an air of dignity and rough charm that one couldn't find in a million men.

Now, looking at Qi Anran, he seemed ordinary in every way and cowardly too.

"Do you still want this money?" Han Ningzhen asked.

She reminded Qi Anran, who laughed at himself mockingly, "Yeah, I'll take it. Didn't you say I'm poor? How can I not?"

"Who was that man just now? Do you know him?"

"How would I know him? Probably one of Su Meixi's patients; I could smell medicine on him," Qi Anran said.

Han Ningzhen helped him pick up the money and said, "That guy was pretty good-looking, quite tall."

Qi Anran panicked immediately, worried that Han Ningzhen's heart might change. He hurriedly reassured her, "That guy looked like an athlete; you know athletes, all brawn and no brains. And look, he doesn't even own a car, has to ride on Su Meixi's tiny electric scooter to pick someone up."

With that, Han Ningzhen finally felt a bit better.

Qi Anran wrapped his arm around her and whispered in her ear, "Ningzhen, I want to go to your place later, to eat cherries."

"Eat cherries" made Han Ningzhen's face turn red immediately; it was a code only those in the know would understand.

"Then let's go, but first you have to treat me to dinner."

"No problem."

Su Meixi drove Gu Wei to the entrance of the hospital.

She stopped the scooter and asked him, "Why are you here again?"

"To pick you up from work," Gu Wei said.

Su Meixi was utterly speechless.

Who's picking up whom here?

Gu Wei seemed to guess what Su Meixi was thinking and said, "How about I drive?"

"Let me drive. You're injured, and I want to go home to pick something up; you don't know the way."

Gu Wei didn't argue and just sat obediently in the back seat of the electric scooter.

He found her scent very pleasant, calming, and relaxing.

At the crossroads.

The red light here was exceptionally long, lasting for a minute.

Inside the black business car, Uncle Quan casually glanced to the side and saw Gu Wei.

"Master, see that guy on the electric scooter? Isn't that the Second Young Master?"

Gu Cheng looked in the direction Uncle Quan pointed.

He saw Gu Wei sitting on the back seat of an electric scooter, with his long arms and legs occupying half of it.

The girl driving in front appeared tiny against him, bracing his weight with her feet on the ground, looking particularly strained.

After a while, the green light came on, and the girl expertly started the scooter wobbling forward.

Gu Wei, sitting behind, seemed exceptionally at ease.

Gu Cheng couldn't help but mock, "The kid's got style!"

Uncle Quan said, "The Second Young Master isn't lacking money either, why didn't he buy that Miss a car?"

Gu Cheng pondered for a moment and said, "Perhaps a high-end hunter often appears in the guise of prey."

Uncle Quan found it complex; he didn't understand and only asked, "Master, do we need to follow them?"

"No need."

Gu Cheng looked at the information in his hand.

He had his assistant investigate Su Meixi from all angles, including all possible places she might have encountered Gu Wei in the past few years.

Other than a hotel stay two months ago, there were no other intersections. Su Meixi was a homebody, never stepping out unless it was for work.

Moreover, she had a boyfriend two months ago and was cheated on.

Looking at her life trajectory, it was indeed a sad tale.

Such a girl couldn't possibly scheme to get close to Gu Wei; she didn't have the energy.

Su Meixi drove Gu Wei, and half an hour later, they arrived at her old home.

The old house was a seven-story building with staircases, built in the early '80s; she lived on the fifth floor.

Starting from the iron gate downstairs, one could see the stairwell covered with various small ads for unclogging drains, pipe repair, and even some promising the birth of sons or daughters.

Su Meixi asked Gu Wei, "Are you okay climbing the stairs with your injury?"

"No problem at all," Gu Wei said, then added, "Have you lived here since you were a child?"

"Yeah, it's the house my grandfather left behind. With housing prices so high nowadays, I can't afford a new place. Even my medical college tuition was from a loan, which I only gradually paid off after graduating."

Gu Wei nodded, showing understanding.

When they reached the fifth floor, Su Meixi was unlocking her door when the door opposite opened, and a man in his sixties came out.

"Xiao Xi, you're back?" Uncle Zhang saw Su Meixi and looked very concerned.
