Old Lady Bates is getting on in years, and feels that having experienced much, she has become critical of everyone. She thinks everyone should be under her command, including Noah Bates and her, Amy Andrews; they should both obediently listen to her.
Penelope Bates drinks her pigeon soup with utter caution, terrified of displeasing her mother and great-grandmother. Only after they finish does Old Lady Bates huff and walk out.
Penelope Bates feels that her great-grandmother doesn't really care about her, but cares about... the face of the Bates Family.
Amy Andrews disagrees, believing that as long as she pleases Old Lady Bates, Noah Bates won't be able to escape her grasp. Thus, she says to her daughter, "Serve the Old Lady well in the future, make her like you, got it?"
Penelope Bates nods weakly, her eyes brimming with pain and confusion.
