Sophia Yates sneered with disdain, "I'm not like you, hesitating when I shouldn't, and yet determined to kill when hesitation isn't needed. What I want, I've always taken by force, by plundering."

"That's a beast," Noah Bates stared into Sophia Yates' eyes, "not a man."

Sophia Yates was so shaken by Noah Bates' gaze that her body trembled. Once she regained her composure, she curved her lips, "Men are beasts."

Noah Bates remained silent; he couldn't sway Sophia Yates. Whatever the outcome, she would have to bear it herself in the future.

The two men spent a meaningless New Year's Eve in this unfamiliar city. Late at night, someone set off fireworks. Noah Bates watched them rise into the sky, momentarily illuminating the coldness in his eyes, only to extinguish quickly into nothingness.
