The man's tall silhouette disappeared outside the hospital room door.
Miss Wen clenched the blanket tightly, her fingertips turning white.
She knew Bao Yancheng too well.
Without bearing a child, her grandfather's nursing fees would sooner or later be cut off.
The savings in her hands were but a drop in the bucket against the monthly expense of two hundred thousand.
The urgent matter at hand was to gather enough for her grandfather's nursing fees.
As the sky darkened, the hospital regained its silence.
The faint sound of a wheelchair approached the door, which was then knocked.
"Sister-in-law Wanzhi, it's me."
Miss Wen looked warily towards the door.
Without waiting for a response, the visitor pushed the door open and entered.
Miss Wen leaned against the headboard, looking indifferently at the newcomer.
Xiang Yiran arrived with a smile on her face, closed the door, and approached Miss Wen's bed.
"Sister-in-law Wanzhi, you're not asleep? You were so quiet, I thought you had fallen asleep."
Suspicion filled Miss Wen's eyes.
Xiang Yiran entered the Bao Family a year ago, becoming Bao Yuan's adopted daughter, and was deeply cherished by Bao Yancheng.
But it was she who had staged an accident, willing to confine herself to a wheelchair just to gain Bao Yancheng's favor!
"What are you doing here?"
Xiang Yiran smiled charmingly, her eyes gleaming with cunning and cruelty.
"I heard sister-in-law has finally agreed to divorce, and I especially came to thank you."
Xiang Yiran leaned forward, placing a bouquet of lilies on the nightstand.
Miss Wen frowned and shifted slightly away.
Xiang Yiran acted as though she didn't notice and sat up straight, casually flipping her hair to reveal an intricately designed pink diamond engagement ring.
Pain struck Miss Wen's heart.
She recognized that ring.
She had once been captivated by its design.
A while back, she inadvertently noticed that Bao Yancheng's assistant was inquiring about where to buy that ring.
A rare pink diamond that had sold for a sky-high price at auction.
Of course, Miss Wen wasn't naive enough to think that the ring was bought for her by Bao Yancheng.
But she hadn't expected it to become the engagement ring between him and Xiang Yiran!
Seeing Miss Wen's dim and hurt expression, Xiang Yiran's smile grew more profound.
"Thank you, sister-in-law, for divorcing Yancheng. It made it possible for us to be together. This engagement ring was also specially bought for me at the auction. I don't like something so expensive, but he insisted."
Xiang Yiran's face was filled with sweetness.
Miss Wen felt nauseous and averted her gaze.
With a sinister tone, Xiang Yiran added, "Now that the child is gone, and you've agreed to the divorce, you should move out of Half Mountain Villa as soon as possible. It's not very convenient for Yancheng and me to live in the old house."
Xiang Yiran stressed 'not very convenient,' which made Miss Wen feel uneasy.
She looked at Xiang Yiran, ready to counter her words, but they got stuck in her throat as surprise filled her eyes.
Xiang Yiran tossed her long black hair to one side, revealing a pale neck dotted with visible kiss marks!
Miss Wen lowered her eyes in a fluster, feeling a stabbing pain in her heart.
After all these years, whether in or out of bed, she knew Bao Yancheng too well.
That was his favorite place to leave marks.
Could it be that he and Xiang Yiran had already...
Miss Wen didn't know if it was numbness from heartache or if she had simply given up, but when she raised her head to look at Xiang Yiran again, her eyes were clear.
"If Miss Xiang has nothing else, please leave. I need to rest."
Xiang Yiran didn't persist and rolled her wheelchair out of the hospital room.
She had achieved her goal for today.
And she didn't want to look at Miss Wen's face for another minute!
Pulling out a tissue from her bag, Yiran wiped away the red marks on her neck, unable to hide the smugness on her face.
Had she known that such a trivial trick would fool Wen Wanzhi, she wouldn't have bothered to orchestrate that elaborate stage accident back then, which resulted in her own confinement to a wheelchair.
She vowed to reclaim this debt from Wen Wanzhi's very skin!
Wen Wanzhi's health was so frail that it took her over half a month to be discharged from the hospital.
Since their displeasing parting, Bao Yancheng had not appeared at the hospital again.
Both Ye Yazhou and Dr. Chen had tried to convince her to start early treatment for leukemia.
But until the expenses for her grandfather's care were secured, Wen Wanzhi couldn't agree.
No sooner had she completed the discharge procedures than the nursing home's call came through.
Wen Wanzhi furrowed her brows, a bad premonition washing over her.
"Miss Wen, Mr. Wen has had a sudden cerebral hemorrhage, please hurry over!"
Wen Wanzhi's expression changed dramatically, and she hailed a taxi to rush to the nursing home.
Tears blurred her vision, and she was almost pleading with God in desperation.
By the time she arrived, her grandfather was already in the emergency room.
Despite being rushed to the hospital quickly, the outlook was not good, and the hospital issued a critical condition notice.
After signing various documents, the red lights of the emergency room glared painfully.
Wen Wanzhi leaned against the wall, her body slowly sliding down until she was crouched in the corner, embracing her knees.
More than a year ago, it was a stroke as well that had Mr. Wen narrowly escaping death, only to wake up unable to recognize her anymore.
But back then, at least she had Bao Yancheng by her side.
He was like a mountain, shielding her from hardship; no matter what, he stood in front of her.
Whether it was the horrifying notices of critical condition or facing the bright red glare of the operating lights.
Wen Wanzhi hugged her head, allowing tears to flow down her arms and into her sleeves.
She had only ever relied on Bao Yancheng, and yet she had suffered the grandest betrayal.
She couldn't think of him anymore.
At least from now on, she had to get used to a life without anyone by her side.
It seemed like a century had passed when at last the operating light turned off, and the chief surgeon came out.
Wen Wanzhi pushed herself up using the armrest of the chair and quickly approached.
The doctor, looking at the pale, disheveled woman, softened his tone.
"You got him here just in time, he's out of danger now, and we're moving him to the ICU. He should wake up in a couple of days."
Wen Wanzhi swayed slightly, her heart settling back into place, a smile emerged on her pale face, "Thank you, doctor, thank you."
Wen Wanzhi, leaning on her tired body, stood in the payment office.
The staff informed her that Bao Yancheng had already withdrawn the funding for the nursing home.
Wen Wanzhi was not surprised.
The people and things she cared about could be callously taken and tormented by Bao Yancheng.
Just to make her suffer.
After settling her grandfather's medical and nursing fees, Wen Wanzhi was left almost penniless.
Ye Yazhou arrived at the hospital, and Wen Wanzhi planned to make a trip to the studio first.
There were some old pieces there, perhaps she could sell them to make some money.
Wen Wanzhi borrowed Ye Yazhou's car, intending to make a quick round trip.
The car drove to the suburbs, stopping at the gate of a simple and elegant villa.
Wen Wanzhi got out of the car, familiarly pushed open the garden gate, but was startled, her body trembling.
The once pristine white walls were wantonly defaced with graffiti.
Bright red and black ink spelled out harrowing words.
"Attempted murderer," "executioner designer," "Pay with your life"...
Wen Wanzhi instinctively sensed danger and took a half step back.
Noises of scattered footsteps approached from the entrance.
With a snap, the main gate closed and locked!
"Finally, this bitch shows up, brothers, let's get her."
Wen Wanzhi turned in panic, several thugs wielding clubs advanced with a menacing look, closing in on her!
