Three weeks had passed since the brutal encounter that left Aryan gravely injured. His body, though still weak, stirred under the pale glow of a campfire. As his eyes fluttered open, the first thing he saw was the silhouette of Kai Takeda tending to herbs in the corner.
Aryan's instincts immediately kicked in. He tried to rise, his eyes sharp and accusing. "Who are you?" he rasped. "What do you want from me?"
Kai, calm and unfazed, glanced at him with a smirk. "You should rest, bro. I'm not your enemy. I'm the one who kept you alive."
Aryan tried to speak, but his body betrayed him, and he collapsed back onto the makeshift bed of leaves and cloth. His mind raced. If he isn't my enemy, then where is—
"Selena," he said aloud, his voice hoarse. "Where is she?"
Kai pointed towards the forest. "She went hunting for food. For you, by the way."
Hearing this, Aryan's chest tightened—not from pain but from guilt. The image of Selena struggling alone in the wilderness because of his failure tore at him.
Kai added nonchalantly, "You know, she's been awake every night, watching over you. She cried for you more times than I can count."
Aryan's heart skipped a beat. He clenched his fists, hiding his emotions behind a neutral expression. "Is that so?" he murmured, feigning indifference.
Scene 2: Selena's Return
Moments later, the sound of hurried footsteps approached the camp. Selena emerged from the dense foliage, holding a small bag of berries and roots. Her weary eyes lit up when she saw Aryan sitting upright.
"ARYAN!" she cried, dropping everything and running to him. She threw her arms around him, sobbing uncontrollably.
Aryan, taken aback, awkwardly patted her back. "Why are you crying?" he teased, attempting to lighten the mood. "You're hurting my wound!"
Selena immediately pulled back, panic flashing across her face. "Oh my god, I'm so—"
Before she could finish, Aryan's lips curled into a mischievous grin. "Just kidding."
Her eyes widened in disbelief before she balled her fist and punched him squarely on the shoulder—right near his wound.
"OW!" Aryan yelped, his body instinctively flopping back onto the bed. His head hit the soft surface, and he groaned dramatically.
Kai burst into laughter, clutching his stomach. "You guys are hilarious! Honestly, I thought you'd be all serious and brooding after what happened, but this... this is gold!"
Selena, still fuming but slightly embarrassed, crossed her arms. "That's what he gets for making stupid jokes."
Aryan, wincing but smiling through the pain, looked up at her. "Glad to see you haven't changed."
Selena's stern expression softened, and she glanced away, her cheeks tinged with red. "Idiot," she muttered under her breath.
Scene 3: A Watchful Eye
As the trio settled down, Kai began preparing a meal with the supplies Selena had gathered. Aryan rested, his thoughts churning. He had narrowly escaped death, but at what cost? The weight of Selena's struggles and sacrifices bore down on him.
Meanwhile, above them, the Host observed the scene from an invisible perch, his expression one of amusement.
"Ah, the bonds of humanity," the Host mused, his voice echoing in the void. "So fragile, yet so resilient. The players begin to form their alliances, unaware of the trials that await."
The Host's screen flickered, showing glimpses of other players scattered across the world—Raiden Vega building his black market, Ryoko Mori weaving her labyrinth, and mysterious shadows moving in the distance.
"Fascinating," the Host murmured. "Every bond formed, every alliance made, is just another thread in the grand tapestry of this game. Let us see how long they last."
The screen zoomed back to Aryan, Selena, and Kai sharing a quiet moment around the fire. The Host's grin widened. "After all, it's always more entertaining to break something once it's been built."
