Chapter 27: Shadows of Betrayal
The battle had left the rebels bloodied but victorious. The corpses of the gods' soldiers and their monstrous beasts littered the battlefield, the scent of burning flesh and blood heavy in the air. The rebels had suffered great losses, but they had proved that they were no longer powerless against their oppressors.
Yet, as the fires died down and the wounded were tended to, a growing unease settled in Aarav's heart. Something about the gods' retreat felt… wrong. It was too sudden, too organized. Almost as if they had planned for this outcome.
Standing atop a crumbling watchtower, Aarav surveyed the battlefield with narrowed eyes. Kavya approached, wiping the blood from her sword. "You're not celebrating," she noted, standing beside him.
Aarav exhaled sharply. "Something's off. The gods don't just retreat. They had us cornered. They could have wiped us out, but instead, they left."
Kavya frowned. "Maybe they underestimated us. Maybe they realized we're stronger than they thought."
Aarav clenched his fists. "Or maybe… they wanted us to win."

The Informant
As the rebels gathered their dead and regrouped, a lone figure approached from the darkness. Cloaked and hooded, he moved like a whisper, avoiding detection until he stood just a few feet from Meera.
She spun, her dagger at the ready. "Who are you?"
The figure slowly raised his hands. "I bring a warning."
Aarav and Kavya rushed over, their hands on their weapons. The figure pulled back his hood, revealing a scarred face and piercing golden eyes. "My name is Arjun. I was once a soldier of the gods. Now, I am their enemy."
Meera scoffed. "Convenient. Why should we trust you?"
"Because if you don't listen," Arjun said gravely, "you'll all be dead by sunrise."
Silence fell over the group. Aarav gestured for Arjun to continue.
"The battle you fought today—it was a test," Arjun explained. "The gods wanted to see how much you've grown, how strong you've become. And now that they know, they are preparing to crush you in one decisive strike."
Aarav's heart pounded. "How do you know this?"
"Because I was one of the generals leading their forces," Arjun admitted. "Until I saw what they truly are. I defected, and now I am here to help you."

The Trap Unfolds
The rebels listened in tense silence as Arjun revealed the gods' strategy. The retreat had not been a defeat—it was bait. A larger force was already on its way, preparing to attack at dawn when the rebels were at their weakest.
Meera cursed under her breath. "Damn it. We should've known."
Kavya glared at Arjun. "And why should we believe you? For all we know, you could be leading them straight to us."
Aarav studied Arjun's face. There was something about him—the way he spoke, the weight of his words. A man burdened by guilt.
"We don't have a choice," Aarav finally said. "If he's right, we need to move now."
Meera hesitated, then nodded. "Then let's not waste time. What's our best option?"
Arjun smirked. "You're not going to like it."

The Desperate Escape
With no time to waste, the rebels gathered what supplies they could and prepared to evacuate. Arjun led them through hidden tunnels that ran beneath the mountains, paths only he knew.
As they moved, the ground trembled. The gods' army had arrived.
The sound of marching boots and snarling beasts echoed above. The rebels quickened their pace, hearts pounding.
"We're running out of time," Meera muttered.
Suddenly, a section of the tunnel collapsed ahead of them. Dust and rubble filled the air as the exit was sealed shut.
Aarav turned to Arjun, eyes blazing. "You knew this would happen, didn't you?"
Arjun's expression darkened. "I suspected. The gods always prepare for betrayal."
Kavya clenched her fists. "Then what do we do now?"
Arjun looked back, listening carefully. "There's another way out, but it's risky."
Aarav's jaw tightened. "Risky is all we have left."
As the gods' forces above began breaking into the tunnels, the rebels followed Arjun deeper into the darkness, knowing that their next battle would decide the fate of their rebellion.
To be continued…
