Kai looked at the old man, his usual smirk tugging at his lips. "Well, guess it's time for us to go investigate. Let's see what kind of nightmare we're walking into."
The old man nodded, his expression grim. "Be careful out there. Whatever is lurking in the dark isn't something normal. If you find them... bring them back. If you can't... at least make sure they don't suffer."
Kai chuckled, stretching his arms. "Oh, come on, old man. Have a little faith in us. I mean, we're basically professionals at running into dangerous, probably cursed situations."
Elara groaned, crossing her arms. "Kai, stop joking about everything! We're dealing with something serious!"
Kai raised his hands in mock surrender. "Relax, Captain. I do take this seriously. I just happen to have fun while doing it."
The old man sighed, shaking his head but offering a faint smile. "Just don't let your confidence get you killed."
Kai grinned. "No promises."
Elara let out an exasperated sigh before turning toward the door. "Let's just go before I change my mind about working with you."
Kai followed her out, stepping into the cooling air as the last remnants of sunlight bled into the horizon. The village seemed even quieter now, the eerie stillness creeping in with the night.
"Well," Kai mused, shoving his hands into his pockets. "This is shaping up to be a nice little horror story."
Elara shot him a look. "Not everything is a joke, Kai."
Kai smirked, tilting his head toward her. "No, but it does make it more entertaining."
She sighed, shaking her head. "Just focus. We have a job to do."
Kai looked ahead, his expression briefly softening. "Yeah. We do. Let's find out what's really going on."
With that, they set off into the fading light, heading toward the unknown.
Kai and Elara walked through the dimly lit village, their footsteps echoing softly against the cobblestone streets. The sun had fully set, and a blanket of darkness covered Duskford. The village, already eerie in daylight, now felt completely different—empty, unsettling, and thick with an unspoken tension.
"We haven't seen or heard anything yet," Elara muttered, her arms crossed as she scanned the surroundings. "If something is supposed to be out here, it's doing a damn good job of hiding."
Kai stopped walking, his gaze shifting toward the sky. He studied the moon and stars above, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.
Elara noticed and sighed in frustration. "Really, Kai? Stargazing? Now?"
Kai smirked, still looking up. "I was just thinking... No matter how dangerous things get, the stars never change. It's kinda nice."
Elara rolled her eyes. "Focus, would you? We're on a mission, not a midnight stroll."
Kai chuckled but nodded. "Right, right."
They kept moving forward, but suddenly, the air around them shifted. The streets became eerily silent, the usual creaks of wooden houses and distant rustling of trees vanishing altogether. The temperature dropped slightly, and a faint mist curled along the ground.
Kai's expression darkened as he scanned their surroundings. "Something's happening."
Elara's hand instinctively went to her weapon. "You feel it too?"
Before Kai could respond, whispers—low, distorted, and unnatural—began to drift through the air. They came from nowhere and everywhere at once, weaving through the streets like ghostly murmurs carried by the wind.
Elara stiffened. "The old man was right."
Kai's eyes narrowed, his usual teasing demeanor gone. "This isn't normal."
He took a step forward, his voice steady. "Skill: Eternal Vanguard."
Forty black circles materialized before them, pulsing with dark energy. From each, elite undead warriors emerged, clad in dark armor and wielding spectral weapons. They bowed before Kai, awaiting his command.
Elara took a step back, watching in awe. "I forget sometimes just how powerful you really are..."
Kai smirked. "My elite warriors, spread out. Search the village and the surrounding forest for anything unusual. Go!"
Without hesitation, the undead soldiers nodded and dashed away, their movements swift and disciplined. Their presence alone made the eerie whispers momentarily retreat into silence.
Kai exhaled slowly. "Whatever's going on, it's close. And I'd rather find it before it finds us."
Elara nodded, gripping her weapon tighter. "Agreed. No more distractions. Let's finish this."
With their senses heightened and the undead vanguard searching ahead, Kai and Elara pushed forward into the unsettling night.
Kai and Elara stepped into the Ravenglen Woods, their boots pressing into the damp earth as the shadows of twisted trees loomed around them. The rumors of chanting voices, shifting shadows, and unseen eyes watching them from the dark ran through Kai's mind as he glanced around.
"You ever notice how the scariest stories usually start in places like this?" Kai mused, his voice lighthearted despite the eerie atmosphere.
Elara scoffed, keeping a firm grip on her weapon. "If you're trying to make this feel less creepy, it's not working."
"Just saying, we could be walking into some horror legend in the making."
"Or we could be walking into an ambush," Elara muttered. "Stay focused."
As they continued deeper, Kai's elite undead warriors spread out, scanning the woods for any unusual movement. The air felt thick, as if charged with something unnatural. Kai exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. "The stories didn't mention the air feeling like this. It's almost... pressing down on us."
Elara nodded. "It's more than just the forest. Something here is wrong."
They kept walking, their conversation shifting to more personal matters as they pushed forward.
"It's been a year, huh?" Kai mused, glancing over at Elara. "You ever think about how much we've changed?"
Elara raised an eyebrow. "What are you getting at?"
"Just wondering if you ever think about the future. You know, love, romance, all that stuff."
Elara huffed. "Not exactly at the top of my priorities right now. What about you?"
Kai smirked. "Oh, you know me, Elara. I'm irresistible, but tragically single."
Elara rolled her eyes. "You're impossible."
Kai chuckled but didn't press further. The conversation was cut short when one of his undead elite soldiers approached, its glowing eyes staring up at him before it spoke in a guttural tone. "Master... I have found something."
Kai straightened. "Show me the way."
The undead soldier nodded and turned, leading them deeper into the Ravenglen Woods. The farther they went, the colder the air became, wrapping around them like an unnatural frost.
"You feel that?" Elara whispered, her breath visible in the chill. "It's getting worse."
Kai exhaled, watching as a faint crimson glow flickered through the trees ahead. "Well, that's not ominous at all."
Elara's grip on her weapon tightened. "This must be it."
The chanting began—low, rhythmic, and unsettling. The voices echoed through the woods, the words unintelligible yet carrying a distinct weight that made the hair on the back of their necks stand up.
Kai's playful demeanor faded slightly as he muttered to himself. "Feels like we're stepping into something big."
Elara nodded, her face serious. "Whatever it is, we need to be ready."
As they pressed forward, the crimson light intensified, casting eerie shadows through the trees. The whispers surrounded them now, growing louder with each step.
"Hope you're ready for this," Kai muttered, glancing at Elara.
She gave him a sharp look. "You're not backing out, are you?"
Kai smirked. "Never. Just wondering if we're the heroes... or if we're walking into something we won't walk out of."
With that, they steeled themselves, continuing toward the ominous glow and the source of the chanting, deeper into the unknown.
Kai and Elara crept through the dense underbrush, moving silently as they approached the source of the crimson light. The eerie chanting had grown louder, filling the clearing ahead with an unsettling cadence that made the air feel thick and oppressive.
Hiding behind the trees, they carefully peeked out, their eyes locking onto the scene before them.
Twelve figures stood in a tight circle, each clad in crimson hooded jackets, their hands raised toward the glowing sigil inscribed into the earth. The markings pulsed with arcane blood magic, illuminating the cultists' faces in a sinister glow.
Kai let out a low whistle. "Well, that's definitely a cult."
Elara shot him a sharp look. "Shut up and listen."
The cultists continued their chants, their voices low and rhythmic, blending into the hum of the night. Then, one of them, a man standing slightly apart from the rest, stepped forward and addressed the group.
"Leader Lilith Veyne, what exactly are we doing with these humans? Your rituals grow more... ambitious."
At the mention of the name, Kai's brows lifted slightly, while Elara tensed beside him.
From the center of the ritual, a woman stepped forward, peeling back her hood and letting her midnight-black hair cascade down her shoulders.
The air shifted instantly, as if reality itself bent to acknowledge her presence. Her deep violet eyes, slitted like a predator's, gleamed in the crimson light. A quiet, unreadable smirk played on her lips, the otherworldly luminescence of her gaze momentarily flashing eerie crimson as she stepped forward.
The aura around her was palpable, a swirling mix of power and secrecy, exuding both danger and allure.
Lilith Veyne.
Her Appearance: Height: 5'8" (173 cm) Build: Slender and graceful, yet deceptively strong. She moves with fluid precision, every step calculated. Skin Tone: Pale with a faint lavender or bluish undertone, hinting at her infernal heritage. Under moonlight, her skin takes on an almost ethereal glow. Eyes: Deep violet with slitted pupils, radiating an otherworldly luminescence. When using magic, they momentarily flash with an eerie crimson glow. Hair: Long, flowing, and raven-black with subtle streaks of dark purple near the ends. Her hair often floats slightly when casting spells, affected by her arcane energy. Facial Features: Sharply defined with high cheekbones, an angular jawline, and full lips, her expression constantly hovers between unreadable amusement and cold indifference. Horns: Curved and elegant, resembling polished obsidian, arching slightly backward from her temples. They are not too large but unmistakably demonic. When suppressing her demonic nature, they fade into near invisibility. Tail: A sleek, prehensile tail, about three feet long, tipped with a small arrowhead shape. It sways subtly when she's deep in thought or irritated.Kai and Elara froze, their eyes widening slightly. They exchanged quick glances before both muttered under their breath.
"She's a half-demon."
Lilith lifted a single brow, as if she had heard them despite the distance. Her smirk widened slightly, but she did not immediately acknowledge them.
Instead, she turned to the cultist who had spoken and tilted her head, her voice calm yet laced with authority. "I am already deep in uncovering the truth. Blood magic is merely a tool—one that few truly understand."
Kai narrowed his eyes, watching her carefully. "She's no ordinary mage."
Elara kept her voice low. "And she's no ordinary cult leader, either. What the hell is she planning?"
The air around them seemed to thicken, the crimson glow pulsating like a heartbeat in the darkness.
