Chapter 5: Shadows of Betrayal

The air crackled with tension as the guards closed in. Sera's cybernetic arm hummed with energy, deflecting blows with inhuman precision. Oleg fought like a man possessed, his movements a blur of raw strength and calculated strikes. Elián, however, could only watch from behind the console, his heart pounding as the weight of their situation sank in.

"This isn't right!" he muttered to himself, his fingers trembling as he scrambled to shut down the alarm. But the system was fighting back, layers of countermeasures activating faster than he could bypass them.

A shout tore through the din. Elián looked up just in time to see Sera take a hit — a guard's baton slamming into her side. She stumbled but didn't fall, her expression twisted with pain and fury.

"Elián!" Oleg's voice cut through the chaos like a blade. "We need that grid offline! Now!"

"I'm trying!" Elián shouted back, his voice shaking. He rerouted another circuit, bypassing yet another security protocol, but the progress was excruciatingly slow.

Suddenly, a new voice crackled over the guards' comms. It was cold and commanding, with a sinister edge that sent chills down Elián's spine.

"Do not let them escape. Capture the engineer alive. Terminate the others."

Elián froze. They knew who he was.

Before he could process the implications, a sharp pain shot through his shoulder. He gasped, spinning around to see a guard pulling back a shock baton.

"Gotcha," the guard sneered, raising the weapon for another strike.

Elián braced for impact, but it never came. A blur of motion knocked the guard off his feet, sending him sprawling to the ground. Oleg stood over him, his fists clenched, his knuckles bloody.

"You okay?" Oleg asked, pulling Elián to his feet.

"No," Elián admitted, clutching his shoulder. "But let's finish this."

The sound of reinforcements echoed through the corridor. They were running out of time.

"I'll hold them off," Oleg said, stepping toward the oncoming guards. "Sera, get Elián out of here!"

"No!" Elián protested. "I'm not leaving you behind!"

"Go!" Oleg roared, his voice filled with a fury that left no room for argument.

Sera grabbed Elián's arm, her grip firm despite her injuries. "Come on!"

Elián stumbled after her, his mind a whirlwind of fear and guilt. He glanced back, catching one last glimpse of Oleg as the guards surrounded him.

They darted through a side corridor, the sounds of combat fading behind them. The city's neon lights flickered through the cracks in the walls, casting eerie patterns on the floor.

"We can't just leave him," Elián said, his voice hoarse.

"We don't have a choice," Sera replied, her tone grim. "He knew the risks. We all do."

Elián opened his mouth to argue, but the words died in his throat as they emerged into a deserted alley. The air was thick with tension, the faint hum of surveillance drones a constant reminder of the danger they were in.

"We need to get back to the safe house," Sera said, checking the alley for any signs of pursuit.

Elián nodded, though his mind was elsewhere. Oleg's words echoed in his ears. We've planned for everything. But had they planned for betrayal?

As they slipped through the shadows, Elián's thoughts churned. Someone had known about their mission. Someone had set them up.

And as much as he didn't want to believe it, a nagging voice in the back of his mind whispered the unthinkable: the traitor might be one of their own.
