I managed a smile as Nicola's driver ushered me into the sleek black car. My stomach, however, remained a knot of churning nerves.
"Good," Nicola said, her voice clipped as she pulled away from the curb. "It seems my brother hasn't noticed any discrepancies so far. But remember, Evie, your eyes and ears are on high alert. Report anything out of the ordinary, anything that might suggest he's regaining his memory."
"Of course," I murmured, clutching my handbag tighter. The weight of the lie felt heavier with each passing mile.
"Consider the apartment a bonus," Nicola continued, a hint of something that might have been amusement flickering in her eyes. "Part of the compensation package, for as long as your performance remains satisfactory."
My jaw dropped. A furnished apartment in what I was certain would be an expensive part of town, on top of the salary? This was far more than I'd ever bargained for. Guilt gnawed at me, a persistent worm in the pit of my stomach.
