"So, it was you..." he stammered, his eyes widening in realization.
I swallowed hard, my pulse quickening. "What are you talking about?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"That girl who managed to catch one of the most dangerous rogues in the Pack Games," he replied, his words hanging in the air like a heavy fog. I stared at him, at a loss for words. How did he know? And what did he want from me?
"Oh-" I began, but I cut my own words off, suddenly feeling the weight of the forest pressing in around us. "I'm supposed to meet someone else right now, so..." I trailed off, my voice faltering.
"You're not supposed to be here-"
"And you're not supposed to wander around without someone accompanying you because you don't realize how people are confused about you," he interrupted me, his voice soft yet firm. I couldn't help but be drawn to him, despite the unease gnawing at the edges of my mind.
