  "Look, I didn't lend it to you because I feel sorry for you or care about your little speech," he stated coldly. "I don't care about any of that. I could have let you fail and be attacked by those girls," he paused, his gaze piercing, "But I only gave it to you because your inability to keep quiet was irritating me, and I don't want to be around you. Don't approach me again unless you're returning it."

  His words stung, the bluntness of his disdain hitting me harder than I expected. "I hope you're at least smart enough to understand that," he added dismissively, his tone leaving no room for misunderstanding.

  But I still nodded my head in agreement.
