  I can't shake the feeling that the world has narrowed to him and me after his words. I'm still at a loss for what to say, but my heart races uncontrollably in response to his confession.

  "Zane…"

  "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

  "That's not it," I whisper, shaking my head, my lips trembling as I bite them.

  He stands there with his hands stuffed in his pockets. "I can't help but tell you," he murmurs, his voice low, "that I will always be there for you, no matter what. I will always protect you." He pauses, his gaze deepens. "I know it's awkward because I'm your best friend's brother, but I need you to know that I could never see you the way I see my sister. I hope you feel the same way."

  His words, strained and raw, echo the pain in his eyes. He grits his teeth.
