CHAPTER 40: Isabelle's escape

John approached Isabelle's door, his footsteps light and gentle. He raised his hand and knocked softly, waiting for her response.

Inside, Isabelle had finally started eating the bread, savoring the warm, fluffy texture and the sweet, nutty flavor. She had just picked up the cup of tea, her hand closing around it as she prepared to take a sip.

But just as she was about to lift the cup to her lips, John's knock interrupted her. She paused, her hand hovering in mid-air, and called out, "Who's there?"

John's voice responded, his deep tones warm and familiar. "It's me, John. Can I come in?"

Isabelle's face broke into a smile as she set the cup back down and made her way to the door. She opened it to reveal John's handsome face, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled back at her.

"Good morning," he said, his voice low and husky.
