John stood up from the dining table, the echoes of Rachel and Rebecca’s bickering still ringing in his ears. He had hoped breakfast would be a calm affair but as usual, his family’s endless conflicts were making his day start off on the wrong foot. He glanced over at Emily, who had also risen from her seat, straightening her dress as she prepared to leave the room.
“Emily,” John called out, catching her attention before she made her exit. “What’s your schedule like today?”
Emily, pausing mid step and turned to him with a soft smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. She had been preoccupied, her mind once again drifting to her plans with Jack but she quickly shifted gears to address John.
“I have an appointment,” she said, her tone light and nonchalant. “Nothing too important, just some errands I need to run. Why? Do you need me for something?” Emily asked.
