CHAPTER 106: Shelter in the Shadows

  John and Rachel hurried through the quiet streets and the sound of their footsteps was the only thing breaking the silence. The town lay under a blanket of cold and with each step closer to the bar, John felt his shoulders grow heavier. His stomach knotted as he thought about how he'd left things with the bar owner. It had only been a day he had stumbled into that bar, spending his last bit of cash on drinks in an attempt to drown out his mistakes and regrets and now with a broken sense of pride and a desperate plea on his lips he was going back.

  When they finally reached the bar, the bar owner was just finishing up for the night. He leaned against the door, twisting the key in the lock but when he caught sight of them rushing toward him. His hand froze and his face shifted to a mix of confusion and mild irritation.
