Whispers in the Night

The room was plunged into an almost surreal quiet, broken only by Aletha's light breathing. Lying on the infirmary bed, she stirred gently, as if caught in a restless dream. Her furrowed brows betrayed inner turmoil, and her lips moved faintly.

"Nick..." she whispered, barely audible. "Nick..."

Bella, sitting by her bedside, frowned at the repeated use of the name. Concerned, she leaned over and gently patted Aletha's shoulder.

"Aletha... Hey, wake up slowly. It's over, you're safe now."

But Aletha, swept away by the tide of her nightmare, sat up suddenly with a start, almost shouting:

"Nick!"

Her panicked gaze swept the room until it met Bella's soft, soothing gaze. Her hand rested tenderly on her cheek.

"It's me... it's Bella. It's okay now."

Aletha blinked several times, trying to compose herself. Her breathing gradually calmed, and she whispered,

"Bella... I... I'm sorry, I had a nightmare."

"No problem. Do you want to talk about it? You called out Nick's name..."

But Aletha looked away, uncomfortably.

"No... It's not important. But tell me... how did I get here?"

Bella hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath before answering, "When we got there, the house was already on fire. We thought it was empty... but Caden... he had a feeling. He froze for a moment, then said, "She's still in there." And without thinking, he threw himself into the flames.

Aletha's eyes widened in disbelief.

"He… what?"

"He found you half-conscious. He carried you through the flames and pulled you out. You owe him your life, Aletha."

She was speechless. No words seemed sufficient to express what she felt at that moment. A lump of emotion formed in her throat, and she turned her head away, her eyes shining.

"Rest," Bella whispered gently. "The doctor said you need sleep. And… you'll need it for the journey ahead."

Aletha nodded softly. As Bella walked away, she closed her eyes again. But this time, her thoughts weren't haunted by Nick anymore... They were haunted by a look, Caden's, throwing himself into the flames to save her.
