A Step towards the Unknown

The cafeteria buzzed with activity as Sophie and Rachel made their way to their usual table. Lunch hour at Westbridge High was like a microcosm of the school itself—each group had its territory, from the jocks dominating the center tables to the art kids tucked away by the windows.

Sophie unpacked her lunch and glanced around absentmindedly. Rachel was busy recounting her failed attempt to get into the cheerleading squad during sophomore year, making dramatic hand gestures that earned her amused glances from nearby tables.

That's when Sophie noticed Max sitting alone, his sketchbook open in front of him. He was focused, his pencil moving deftly across the page, seemingly oblivious to the noise around him.

"You're staring again," Rachel teased, following Sophie's gaze.

"I'm not staring," Sophie said, but her cheeks betrayed her. "He's just... different."

Rachel raised an eyebrow. "Then why don't you go talk to him? Be different, too."

Sophie hesitated, but Rachel's words lingered. Before she could overthink it, she stood up, carrying her tray and walking over to Max's table.

"Hi," she said softly, setting her tray down. "Do you mind if I sit here?"

Max looked up, startled. For a moment, he didn't say anything, then nodded. "Sure."

Sophie sat, feeling a little awkward under his steady gaze. Up close, she noticed the small smudge of graphite on his fingers and the way his dark eyes seemed to observe everything.

"I'm Sophie," she offered, trying to fill the silence.

"Max," he said simply.

She glanced at his sketchbook, catching a glimpse of what looked like a landscape, intricate and hauntingly beautiful. "You're really good at that."

He closed the book quickly, his expression guarded. "Thanks."

Sophie hesitated, sensing his discomfort. "Sorry, I didn't mean to pry."

"It's fine," Max said, his voice softer this time. "I'm just... not used to people noticing."

"Well, consider me the exception," Sophie said with a small smile.

For the first time, Max's lips curved slightly upward, and Sophie felt an unexpected warmth spread through her chest.
