ch. 22 - Evaluation 2

Elder Magnus," Fergus said, turning to his companion with a thoughtful look, "we've seen the potential in these students. But they are still raw, still unrefined. The challenges ahead will push them further. I suspect we may need to alter the next series of trials—perhaps something more focused on individual combat to see how they handle pressure on their own."

Magnus gave a low grunt, clearly considering the suggestion. His deep-set eyes glinted with the quiet wisdom of a seasoned warrior. "They handled the maze well enough, but you're right. I believe we must test their ability to handle not only the external pressures but their internal limits. The true test lies in how they can control their mind as well as their mana."

Fergus nodded in agreement, and without any further words he activated his technique, the Flame Steps. He drew in a deep breath, channeling the ambient fire mana around him. His body ignited with an ethereal glow as flames flickered around his limbs. Each step he took caused bursts of fire to explode beneath his feet, creating temporary platforms that propelled him upward in a swift, graceful ascent. The technique allowed him to move with the fluidity of wind, but with the power and force of fire. His form was a blur as he climbed, the fire forming a trail behind him, a path forged from his mastery of the technique.

The mountain's rocky terrain seemed to resist him at first, but the platforms of fire pushed him forward, upward, as he ascended with ease. His mind was focused on his mission—to report to Elder Korra about Merlin's performance during the day's trial.

Elder Korra, as always, was positioned at the peak of the mountain, her presence marked by a vibrant crackling energy in the air. A Lightning Gathering Formation was inscribed on the stone floor, an array so potent that it drew ambient lightning from the surrounding atmosphere and concentrated it into a powerful network of energy. The energy in the air seemed alive with the constant low hum of potential power, crackling like a storm trapped within the formation. This was where Elder Korra trained, honing her lightning-based skills, and where she conducted her important matters of the sect.

As Elder Fergus reached the peak, his flames flickered out, and he landed lightly on the stone ground near Elder Korra. She stood tall, her posture as commanding as the thunder in the sky above. Her eyes, still sharp and silver with residual energy from her training, turned toward him, and the air around them seemed to calm as he approached.

"You've returned quickly," Elder Korra remarked, her voice calm but piercing. "Have you seen the progress I asked for?"

Elder Fergus gave a respectful bow, his expression serious but thoughtful. "Indeed. Merlin has proven himself capable, even in the face of unexpected adversity. His use of elemental and basic mana control was impressive, especially for one of his level. Despite being a 2nd Circle Novice, he displayed a depth of understanding that surpassed many of his peers. His cooperation with Nia, particularly in the maze, was exemplary. He adapted quickly to the challenges, though there are still areas where he requires more focus—mainly in physical combat and mana management."

Elder Korra raised an eyebrow, her lips twitching into a faint smile. "It seems his potential exceeds his current standing. What of his shortcomings?"

Fergus took a breath before answering. "His lightning affinity is both a strength and a liability. He relies on it heavily, but I've noticed he tends to use it in excess, not always using his mana efficiently. His body refinement is also something he hasn't showcased fully, he hides it well just like you said. It's still difficult for him to hide the physical prowess he's gained through body cultivation—something we'll need to work on."

"That is to be expected," Elder Korra mused, her gaze turning back to the vast landscape below, where the lightning formation hummed in the distance. "But if he can balance his elements and refine his control, he may be able to advance more rapidly than expected."

Fergus nodded. "I agree. His growth this first day alone has already shown promise, and the way he handled the Lightning Sagittarius was particularly noteworthy. He doesn't hesitate when pressed, and that confidence could serve him well if nurtured."

Elder Korra turned to him, her eyes narrowing in consideration. "Very well. Continue to observe him. This trial period will test him in ways that cannot be anticipated, but from what you've shared, I'm inclined to give him a chance to prove himself further."

With that, she gave a dismissive wave of her hand, and the air around them rippled as a flash of lightning surged briefly from the formation.

"Keep an eye on him, Elder Fergus," she continued. "And report back after a week. Let's see how he handles the pressure."

Fergus bowed once again, a look of understanding in his eyes. "Of course, Elder Korra. I'll keep you informed."

Without another word, he turned and began his descent, using the Flame Steps once more to make his way back down the mountain.
