I took a deep breath and walked up to them. 


She pulled away from George and turned to me, her eyebrows furrowed. 


“G-George, is she with you?” Garnett asked him. I stared at George. 


“Y-Yeah, she’s with me,” George said. 


“S-Sorry,” she said. I swallowed hard. 


“Ahm, Garnett, are you okay? I heard what happened, they said you were rushed to the hospital,” George said. 


“I’m okay, but you? I should be the one asking. How are you? I’m sorry I wasn’t able to help with your mom,” Garnett said. 


I clenched both my fists and looked away. 


Later, we both walked Garnett home. When we got to her house, she looked at George again and smiled at him—again. 


“Good night, go on inside now,” George said.
