The whispers were gone, but the silence was worse. Rose stood in the void, chest rising and falling in uneven breaths. Her fingers curled tightly around the small, pulsing key.
She had figured that was the reason Lucifer had sent her here, because that was the only object that seemed to make sense in this place.
She let out a deep breath. Was that it? Was it over?
Then—the ground rumbled. No. Not the ground. The space around her. It twisted, bent, unraveled like the threads of reality were being pulled apart. Something materialized.
Her stomach dropped. A shadow at first—a form too massive to be real. It stretched beyond the darkness, its shape flickering, shifting. Then—eyes. Hundreds of them. Glowing red, lining its shifting body.
A creature, if it could be called that. It wasn't human. It wasn't beast. It was something in between. And it was watching her.
