Inside the Director's Office,
Quails' animated face wore a satisfied expression. The mechanical electronic eye flashed with green light, clearly full of admiration for Yi Bai.
"By the way, considering the third option won't bring you any immediate benefits, I'll give you a small gift as a gesture of goodwill."
Quails' octopus-like hand picked up the dead beast-head copper ring. With a series of flashy, lightning-quick movements, it didn't take long for a rather ancient-looking belt with a beast-head clasp to materialize before Yi Bai.
"What's this?" Yi Bai's eyes narrowed in slight confusion, feeling that Quails seemed less like a doctor and more like a master artisan.
"This is a 'Soul Lock,' a rare kind of ghost object. Even though it's dead, it still has some value. After my modifications, it's now a special storage tool. The beast-head clasp holds about three cubic meters of storage space. Consider it a gift."
Quails tossed the belt into Yi Bai's hands.
"Thank you, Director!" Yi Bai didn't hesitate.
A rare storage item would certainly be valuable for survival!
In some particularly treacherous horror scenarios, food alone could become a major issue, something that could easily get most human players killed. With this storage item, Yi Bai wouldn't need to worry about such trivialities.
"By the way, your mission is complete. You should be able to return to the human world at any time now, right?" Quails suddenly asked.
At those words, Yi Bai felt the tension beside him. He could tell that Lina, who had been quietly standing by his side, had stiffened.
"Yes, but there's no rush. I'll return when the time limit is about to expire," Yi Bai softly held Lina's hand, speaking with gentle reassurance.
Quails' electronic eye blinked with playful curiosity. "That's good. Since you still have time, why not start fulfilling your duties as the Honorary Chief Physician? The Third Hospital needs to restore its reputation!"
Yi Bai: "..."
He had known it. The belt wasn't a gift with no strings attached.
He had hoped for some sweet, quiet time alone with Lina, perhaps enjoying the private moments between just the two of them. To that end, he had already sent the ghoul off to the morgue.
Now, it seemed, he had miscalculated.
The old saying of "don't bite the hand that feeds you" was certainly something Quails had fully understood.
After leaving the Director's office, Yi Bai followed Lina to the VIP consultation room reserved for the Honorary Chief Physician.
With his new title, the treatment was, of course, far beyond what a mere special appointee could expect.
While urging Yi Bai to get to work, Quails also threw in a favor.
As the Honorary Chief Physician, the Third Hospital now had the right to summon him three times a month. But the twist was that Lina now held the authority to summon him on the hospital's behalf.
That meant Yi Bai effectively had six opportunities every month to escape danger. For any human player, such opportunities were invaluable.
Even the ghoul had gained some perks, as Quails allowed it to remain in the morgue to help with certain menial tasks, handling bodies with no significant purpose.
The ghoul's modest appetite was nothing compared to that of He Yi, and so, it didn't become much of a burden.
At the large floor-to-ceiling window, Yi Bai sat in a swivel chair, gently holding Lina in his arms, enjoying the fleeting peace and warmth before things inevitably progressed further.
Outside, crows perched on the skeletal, pale branches of the dead trees, their crimson eyes glowing in the dull light. Every so often, one of them would swoop down, grab a blood-soaked piece of some unrecognizable organ, and return to its perch, adding a disturbing splash of red to the otherwise lifeless branches.
The world in the horror dimension felt eerily still, without wind.
The twisted, dark clouds in the sky seemed to stretch forever, while the gray stars flickered faintly, resembling the glowing eyes of malicious spirits, embedded in nightmarish faces.
Yi Bai sat there, caught between a sense of enjoyment and unease, as time slowly passed.
The gray morning stars in the sky dimmed, their light fading into the darkening horizon.
The crows began to caw, their calls unsettling in the silence.
Another day had arrived in the terrifying world!
At the entrance to the Third Hospital,
Patients began to appear as if from nowhere, casually greeting one another before entering the hospital's gates.
The tiger-headed security guards stood like statues at either side of the entrance, their intimidating presence making the hospital's entrance look more formidable than ever.
"Hey, where's Dr. Yin? Where's Dr. Yin gone?!"
Soon, patients coming for their checkups realized something was wrong.
The hanging ghost, who had had its tongue healed by Yi Bai and had come back to thank him, hurriedly asked one of the nurses.
It wasn't just him; many other ghost patients had specifically come today because of Dr. Yin's reputation.
But when they reached the special consultation room, they found it empty.
The patients immediately began to panic!
Yesterday, they had formed long lines, but most hadn't been able to see Yi Bai for treatment. So they had come back early this morning to make sure they wouldn't miss out again.
This, of course, was not the outcome they had hoped for.
"Dr. Yin? He's now the Honorary Chief Physician of the Third Hospital. If you want to consult with him, you'll have to make an appointment in advance," one of the nurses explained, her head wrapped in a cloth with blood-red steel pins through it, before turning and walking away.
"What? Dr. Yin got promoted?!" The hanging ghost's voice was filled with disbelief.
"If I remember correctly, didn't Dr. Yin just arrive yesterday?" a nearby zombie muttered.
"Honorary Chief Physician? Doesn't that mean Dr. Yin is now on the same level as Director He?"
"Wow! Dr. Yin's promotion was fast! I've been here at the Third Hospital for years, and I've never seen anyone rise through the ranks so quickly. And he's human!"
"Uh, guys, I gotta go."
"What, you're not thinking of sneaking in and making an appointment, are you?"
"... "
The appointment window, which had been quiet all day, suddenly became a madhouse as Yi Bai's name shot to the top of the list.
In the corners of the Third Hospital's lobby, a group of ghostly doctors in white coats, their forms varied, looked on helplessly.
They watched as patients rushed to make appointments, and a bitter sense of frustration sank in.
The doctors could tell that more patients had shown up, but it wasn't just more—it felt like they'd all come for Yi Bai!
Despite waiting eagerly in the lobby, none of them had a single patient to treat.
After checking with the internal nurses, they were stunned to learn that Yi Bai's appointments had already been booked for the entire week!
How could they not feel defeated, resentful?
Without comparison, there was no pain.
The doctors, now filled with doubt and frustration, couldn't help but consider whether they should switch careers.
