Immortal Work Problem

Darren's POV

Colt bowed and deactivated the communication. I stared straight ahead as I recounted the words of my father.

"Your blood is like the purest gold. It can't merge with tainted silver or cheap diamonds. So for you to have the perfect offspring, you need the perfect Vessels. The power in you is too much to be contained in the body of a human or those of low-level supernaturals. And even then, there can hardly be another you. Your offspring will at most be hybrids or have traits from another branch. None can be a tribrid."

"My father was always one to talk but he did leave me with a lot of knowledge. Sigh. I still do miss him."

I stood up from the couch and headed to the bedroom. Tossing my clothes aside, I walked into the bathroom. I needed to start with a warm bath to wash off the smell of sex still lingering on me.

As the water cascaded down my body, I thought of Jason's daughter whom he had always kept hidden from me. She was clearly the top ranked Vessel among the vampires, being the daughter of the ruling clan.

Meeting her could give me a chance to claim her as mine but I still wondered why Jason would let me meet her now. There had to be an underlying reason. Jason had always been a cunning one.

"Well, I'll leave that till later. Besides, it won't be anything so tedious."

Dressing up in a black suit and a sky blue shirt, I activated the portal while leaving a message for Kristin that I would be back at night. Work needed to be done.

Arriving in the cottage home, I picked up the keys to my blue Bentley Mulsanne and headed downstairs to the living room. The servants greeted me with their heads bowed as I walked down the stairs with light footsteps.

Shortly after, the housekeeper's daughter strode into the living room and greeted me with a courteous bow. Her cream gown, dotted with peach coloured flowers and stopped about an inch below her knees, gave her the elegance of the Victorian times. Her steps were graceful and her smile was ever so charming. Diamond smiled at me and then said something about her mum.

"Sorry Miss Diamond, I didn't get you. Could you come again?"

"Okay, Sir King. My mum fell ill and she wouldn't be able to come in for about a week, so I'll be in charge till then. I hope I don't do so badly."

"From what I've seen, you'll do exceptionally well."

After that, I walked past her with my hands behind my back, heading for the garage. I could feel her strong gaze on me as I disappeared from her sight.

I sat in my car, taking deep breaths before driving off. There was a lot of work piled on my table and I couldn't keep neglecting it.

Work was as hectic as ever and keeping up appearances was even harder. I did go to business school when I was young but that was centuries ago and times have since changed.

I did adapt but still left other things untouched, only gathering the basic knowledge. Besides, I could read the minds of everyone in the building at once so fraudulent actions were hard to keep from me.

Other than that, my secretary kept the grounds for me in my absence and always gave me reports whenever I was around. In the centuries that my company has been around, I had limited myself to letting only my secretary know who I was. And eventually, they work till they die; knowing fully well that their boss was immortal.

They were always female apart from the one time I had a man named Jack Peterson. He was one of my most efficient ones. And was also really hard to convince to stay and work for a vampire.

My interviews were quite simple. The outgoing secretary would suggest as many as they liked and I would also scout some for myself, all having outstanding records being between 20 and 26. And one main question would be asked. "Will you work for a vampire?" And if the answer was positive then two other questions would follow. "Will you keep the secret till the day you die and pay for the consequences should you tell anyone?" and "Are you willing to give your blood as food when necessary?"

Some would last till the second question and only a few would stay till the third. They would still have to write a test if there was more than one candidate that passed. And after that, the others would have their memories of the interview altered before sending them off to other branches.

And that was how Adriana was picked. She came on when she was 21 and has worked five years so far.

As I sat there in my office looking through some documents that required my signature, Adriana walked in.

She wore a white cotton crop top on a black palazzo with white stripes and black stiletto heels that clicked on the marble floor as she walked. I disdained her from knocking for a full year before it became normal practice for her to walk in whenever there was a business matter to attend to. Unless she was coming in with someone, she never knocked.

"Good morning Mr. King. And before you say anything about me calling you that, it has a sexy ring to it."

She said it with a smirk on her face as she dropped the files she had in her hand and sat across from me, crossing her legs.

"So what brings you to my office this morning, Adriana?"

"Well sir, you need to visit the other branches. The mid-year check is long overdue. I've already begun to plan it within your schedule."

"If I have to, then I'll start with the London branch. I'm leaving for London in a few days for a ceremony of a friend's offspring. It would be nice for you to accompany me to London but not to the ceremony. Will that be fine by you?"

"Totally sir. I wouldn't pass up a trip to a beautiful countryside with just you. Or would Kristin be joining us? It's been a while since I saw her."

"No she won't, Adriana. She decided to sit this one out like she always does. But eventually, I'll drag her out with me."

"That would be nice sir. It's been a while since three of us have been locked together in a room, with your beastly body as our only source of warmth…"

I smiled, watching as she teased me with her body, gearing for me to take over. Unfortunately, I was only in the mood for work today.
