Chapter 13: "Hunting Shadows"

The morning air was cold and heavy as Lyra and Kael left the safe house. The city seemed quieter than usual, its streets shrouded in an eerie stillness. Every shadow felt like it was watching them, every sound a potential threat.

"We're heading toward the Obsidian Quarter," Kael said, keeping his voice low.

Lyra glanced at him, her brow furrowed. "Why there? Isn't that where the wardens patrol the heaviest?"

Kael nodded. "Exactly. If Selene wanted to disappear, that's where she'd go. It's the last place anyone would look for her."

Lyra hesitated, the weight of the amulet around her neck a constant reminder of the danger they were in. "And if we find her?"

Kael's jaw tightened. "We make her talk. One way or another."

---

The Obsidian Quarter was a stark contrast to the rest of the city. The buildings were taller, their blackened stone walls looming ominously over the narrow streets. The air felt colder here, the kind of cold that seeped into your bones and refused to let go.

Kael led the way, his steps quick and purposeful. Lyra struggled to keep up, her nerves on edge as she glanced around, half-expecting the cloaked man to appear at any moment.

"Kael," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.

He slowed, turning to look at her. "What is it?"

She hesitated, her fingers brushing against the amulet. "What if… what if Selene's betrayal wasn't just about the amulet? What if there's more to this than we realize?"

Kael's expression darkened. "There's always more. That's what makes this dangerous."

---

As they turned a corner, Kael abruptly held up a hand, signaling for Lyra to stop. She froze, following his gaze to a shadowy figure standing at the far end of the street.

It was Selene.

She was leaning casually against a wall, her hood pulled up but not concealing her face. When she saw them, a sly smile curved her lips.

"Well, well," she said, her voice dripping with mock amusement. "Took you long enough to catch up."

"Selene," Kael growled, his hand moving to the hilt of his sword. "You've got a lot to answer for."

Selene raised an eyebrow, unfazed by his anger. "Do I? Or are you just angry because I was smarter than you?"

Lyra stepped forward, her voice trembling but firm. "Why did you do it, Selene? Why betray us?"

Selene's gaze flicked to Lyra, her expression softening for a brief moment before hardening again. "Betrayal? Is that what you think this is?"

Kael drew his sword, pointing it at her. "Stop playing games. Tell us the truth."

Selene sighed, her smirk fading. "You're so quick to judge. But fine, if you want the truth, here it is: I made a deal. The cloaked man you met? He promised me something I couldn't refuse. Something you two wouldn't understand."

"What could possibly be worth this?" Lyra demanded, her voice breaking.

Selene's eyes locked onto Lyra's, a flicker of sadness in them. "Freedom. From him. From all of this."

Kael stepped closer, his sword still raised. "You chose the wrong side, Selene. Hand over whatever you've taken and tell us what you know."

Selene laughed, a bitter sound. "You still don't get it, do you? This isn't about sides. It's about survival. And you're playing a game you can't win."

---

Before Kael could react, Selene threw a small object to the ground. It exploded in a cloud of smoke, obscuring her from view. Lyra coughed, trying to wave the smoke away, but by the time it cleared, Selene was gone.

Kael cursed under his breath, slamming his fist against the wall. "Damn it!"

"She's scared," Lyra said softly, her gaze distant.

Kael turned to her, his eyes narrowing. "Scared or not, she's still a threat. And now we're back to square one."

---

As they retraced their steps, Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that Selene's words had been more than just a deflection. There was something deeper at play, something they were missing.

When they reached the edge of the Obsidian Quarter, a faint noise caught Lyra's attention. She turned, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the shadows.

"What is it?" Kael asked, noticing her hesitation.

"I thought I heard something," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kael drew his sword, his posture tense. "Stay close."

But before they could move, the shadows around them began to shift, swirling and coalescing into a familiar figure.

The cloaked man stepped forward, his presence as menacing as ever.

"Did you really think you could escape me?" he said, his voice cold and mocking.
