Chapter 20: "The Stranger’s Allegiance"

The passage beyond the door was narrow and dimly lit, with walls that seemed to pulse faintly, as if alive. The air was cold, carrying a faint metallic tang that made Lyra shiver.

Kael walked ahead, his hand on the hilt of his sword, his movements tense and deliberate. Lyra followed closely, her amulet providing a soft, steady glow.

"We're being watched," Kael muttered, his voice low.

Lyra glanced around nervously. "By what?"

Before Kael could respond, the passage opened into a wide, circular room. At its center stood a figure cloaked in deep crimson, their face obscured by a hood.

"Well, well," the stranger said, their voice smooth and laced with amusement. "It seems the temple has brought us together."

Kael immediately stepped in front of Lyra, his sword drawn. "Who are you?"

The stranger chuckled, raising their hands in mock surrender. "No need for hostility. I'm just a traveler, like you. Searching for the Tear of Aeons."

"Convenient," Kael said, his tone sharp. "You just happened to be here, in the middle of this labyrinth?"

Lyra stepped forward cautiously. "If you're searching for the Tear, how did you make it this far? The trials aren't exactly easy."

The stranger tilted their head, their hood shifting slightly to reveal a glimpse of sharp, golden eyes. "Let's just say I have... experience with places like this. But I must admit, it's been fascinating watching the two of you. You work well together."

---

Lyra felt a chill run down her spine. "Watching us?"

"Oh, don't be alarmed," the stranger said with a wave of their hand. "I mean no harm. In fact, I might be able to help you."

Kael's grip on his sword tightened. "Help us? Why would you do that?"

"Because," the stranger said, stepping closer, "our goals align. You want the Tear. I want to ensure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. And trust me, there are worse threats out there than whatever you've faced so far."

The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. Lyra studied the stranger, her instincts warring with her curiosity.

"How do we know we can trust you?" she asked.

The stranger's lips curled into a sly smile. "You don't. But consider this: you've made it this far together. Wouldn't it be wiser to have another ally, rather than another enemy?"

---

Kael stepped forward, his sword gleaming in the faint light. "If you're lying—"

The stranger interrupted him, their tone suddenly serious. "I'm not. But if you don't believe me, I'll prove my intentions."

With a flick of their wrist, the stranger conjured a small flame, its light illuminating the room. "The next trial involves deciphering a riddle and unlocking a hidden mechanism. Without my help, you'll waste precious time—and trust me, time is a luxury you don't have."

Lyra exchanged a look with Kael. "He's right. If the cloaked man is after the Tear, we can't afford delays."

Kael hesitated, his distrust evident. "Fine. But one wrong move, and you'll regret it."

The stranger chuckled. "Fair enough. Shall we begin?"

---

The riddle was carved into the floor, its lines glowing faintly:

"I am not alive, yet I grow. I do not breathe, yet I am essential. I am found in shadows and in light. What am I?"

Lyra knelt beside the inscription, her mind racing. "Not alive, yet it grows... Could it be fire?"

The stranger shook their head. "Close, but not quite. Fire breathes, in its own way. Think simpler."

Kael frowned, his gaze fixed on the words. "Something that exists in both shadow and light... Could it be darkness?"

Lyra's eyes widened. "No, it's... a shadow itself."

The stranger smiled. "Precisely."

---

As Lyra spoke the answer aloud, the room trembled, and a section of the wall slid open, revealing a hidden passage.

"Well done," the stranger said, stepping toward the passage. "Shall we continue?"

Kael held out an arm, blocking their path. "Not so fast. You still haven't told us your name."

The stranger paused, their golden eyes gleaming. "You can call me Silas. For now."

"Silas," Lyra repeated, her gaze wary. "Why are you really here? What's your stake in all this?"

Silas's expression darkened. "Let's just say the Tear has caused enough destruction in the wrong hands. I'm here to make sure history doesn't repeat itself."

Kael's jaw tightened, but he stepped aside, allowing Silas to pass.

"Trust is earned," Kael said coldly.

"And I intend to earn it," Silas replied with a smirk.

---

The trio entered the passage, the air growing colder as they delved deeper. Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that Silas knew more than he was letting on.

Kael's voice broke the silence. "Keep an eye on him."

Lyra nodded. "I will."

But in the back of her mind, the warning from the temple echoed:

"Beware the traitor among you."
