The moment Lyra's fingers closed around the crystal shard, the cavern trembled violently, as if the entire maze was roaring in fury. The obelisk at the center flared with blinding light, its runes pulsating faster and faster, like a heartbeat spiraling out of control.
Kael drew his sword, his instincts taking over. "Lyra, what did you do?"
"I took the shard!" she shouted, clutching it tightly. The shard felt impossibly cold in her hand, yet it thrummed with an undeniable energy. "The Tear showed me this—this is part of the way forward!"
"Couldn't the way forward involve less collapsing ceilings and more nice strolls?" Silas quipped, though his knives were already in his hands.
The ground split open in jagged lines, and from the darkness emerged a writhing mass of shadow creatures. They had no discernible shape—only shifting, liquid forms with glowing red eyes that dripped malice.
Silas whistled low. "Oh, great. Shadow monsters. I was starting to miss them."
---
One of the creatures lunged toward Lyra, its claws extended like tendrils of pure darkness. Kael intercepted it midair, his blade slicing through it with a burst of silver light. The creature dissolved with an ear-piercing shriek, but more took its place.
"They're endless!" Kael growled, cutting down another.
Lyra held the shard tightly, her mind racing. The amulet around her neck began to glow brighter, resonating with the shard in her hand. "There's something here—some kind of connection. I just need time to figure it out!"
"Time isn't exactly on our side, love!" Silas shouted, throwing a dagger into one of the creatures. The blade lodged itself in the monster's core, causing it to disintegrate.
---
Kael positioned himself in front of Lyra, his movements precise and controlled as he fended off the onslaught. "We'll buy you as much time as we can. Do whatever you need to do!"
Lyra closed her eyes, focusing on the shard and the amulet. The magic within them pulsed in unison, forming a rhythm that matched the energy in the room. Her thoughts reached out, trying to understand the connection.
The obelisk's runes seemed to respond to her concentration, their glow stabilizing. The artifacts on the pedestals began to resonate with different tones, creating an eerie, discordant melody.
"What's she doing?" Silas asked, panting as he stabbed another creature.
Kael didn't look away from the fight. "Whatever it is, we have to trust her."
---
Lyra's breathing slowed as she attuned herself to the magic. The shard in her hand seemed to guide her, whispering instructions in a language she couldn't understand but instinctively followed.
"I think... I think the artifacts need to be placed in a sequence," she said aloud, her voice trembling with effort. "They're part of a larger spell to stabilize the room!"
Silas dodged a swipe from one of the creatures, scowling. "And what happens if we get the sequence wrong? Do we just... explode?"
"Probably," Lyra admitted, her focus unbroken.
"Fantastic," Silas muttered.
---
Kael dispatched another shadow creature before glancing over his shoulder. "What's the first artifact?"
Lyra hesitated, the shard in her hand vibrating. "The chalice! It's the first!"
Silas sprinted toward the pedestal holding the chalice, narrowly avoiding a swipe from one of the creatures. He grabbed it, the artifact surprisingly light in his hands. "Now what?"
"Place it in the groove on the obelisk!" Lyra instructed.
Silas did as told, and the chalice clicked into place. A wave of energy rippled outward, momentarily disorienting the shadow creatures.
"It's working!" Lyra exclaimed. "Next is the sword!"
Kael nodded and moved toward the sword, his movements swift and deliberate. He retrieved it and placed it in its corresponding groove. Another wave of energy pulsed through the room, causing several of the creatures to dissolve instantly.
---
The sequence continued: the mask, the scroll, and finally the key. With each artifact placed, the room grew brighter, and the creatures weakened. Lyra held the shard tightly, waiting for the final moment.
When the last artifact was in place, the obelisk's light reached its peak, illuminating the entire cavern. The shadow creatures let out a collective screech before disintegrating into nothingness.
Lyra collapsed to her knees, the shard still glowing faintly in her hand. "We did it..."
Kael helped her to her feet, his expression a mixture of relief and concern. "Are you alright?"
She nodded, though her hands were trembling. "The shard... it's a key. But not just to the maze. To something deeper."
Silas raised an eyebrow. "Deeper? As in 'more dangerous and horrifying,' or 'more treasure-filled and promising'?"
Lyra looked at the obelisk, her eyes filled with both fear and determination. "Both."
