'... and from the pains and anguish, torments and suffering, sorrow and despair, a man is born anew... born anew...'

Day One

Dion was in a dark place, he had been forced to observe a lot of things that had cruelly changed his whole outlook of life.

The spilled blood, the torn flesh and the broken bones, scenes which could have only been recreated by the fingers of a crazy manga artist... even now the screams still resounded in his ears, everyone of them a stabbing reminder that people were dying every second.

He thought about the people he knew and may very well never see again, his mum and dad, his brother Kosi and sister Ella, his childhood best friend Patrick, people like Chinyere, Jerry, the perverted Tunde, Justin and Ibrahim who only wanted to be able to watch porn without interruption fom their strict parents, the amusing Jerry who hated him for years because of an argument, all those... it was all gone.

... all put to an end.

Dion was suddenly angered, he felt a smolthering fury rise from the depths of his chest with purpose, determination, a will raging enough to consume all.

He refused to accept it, that lingering feeling of inferiority that had been eaten him up all this while, that feeling of being played, like every one of his actions were being dictated, a play written by a very sadist playwright.

But he refused, his life won't be going along with someone else's script.

Suddenly a line he had heard yesterday crept back into his mind, something someone close had told, it was his momento, his keepsake, the last thing she had told him before vanishing...

'... you must be responsible for each and every one of your decisions...'

' I will'

He didn't concern himself with how foreboding and ambiguous the statement sounded, he threw away every useless thoughts that had nothing to benefit him in his current situation, instead he focused on his decisions.

In this chaotic and apocalyptic scenario, a single choice could very well spell the difference between life and death, and with his decisions he would decide how many people he was going to save, he was going to be responsible for his decisions.

With that thought, Dion found a purpose, a sense of commitment, something to do, and with it came the rush, he felt so pumped he could jump a building, his blood boiled at the challenge and his entire outlook evolved.

His pale face seemed to have been infused with life and his lifeless eyes brightened to gain a chilling and calculating look buried in their depths.

"... where would you go..." he could barely hear some sounds registering close by.

"Huh?"

Talking... they're talking...

"...where do you think you can call 'safe' right now..."

Ah... damn it!

"... maybe we should head to the Geography lab ".

" Geography?" James?

'Geography?' Dion scoffed.

Right now he could outline almost a hundred issues with that suggestion - no decision - and it immediately made him feel the weight, as a bad decision - like the one just given - could lead to all of their deaths.

But in retrospect, a perfectly calculated decision could save billions of life.

This wasn't a problem for Dion, as Senior Prefect he already had little experience running a school, and in most cases while interacting with foreign schools he knew every one of his actions directly affected his school's status, his decisions were sometimes critical enough to decide a person's whole career.

Dion snickered and then straightened his posture, he raised his chin confidently, a little bit of arrogance manifesting in his actions.

"We are not going to the Geography lab," he said.

His voice was calm and collected, with a commanding tone that forcefully garnered attention.

Dion saw all of them paused and then turned to face him.

The silence was long and with each passing moment the awkwardness in the classroom grew.

They all watched in shock as their SP transformed from a bawling mess, into something remarkable.

The calm that radiated in the depths of his eyes was quiet and comforting, and suddenly everyone in the room were focused on him, his presence drawing their attention, and before long they had subconsciously given in to it... given up.

It took a few moments before anyone reacted, then Obinna shook his head and frowned.

"It seems you don't understand, Kamsi," he said, signs of frustration were beginning to creep into his expression. " But we actually have to - "

"I didn't say we should cozy up here," Dion spoke, his voice suddenly calm and confident. "Just not the Geography lab".

James eyes glinted, he saw something here, a calm and composed attitude, that sharp glint in his eyes, and the commanding tone he used, Ezeh Dion just underwent a massive reformation.

Obinna was quiet, he was considering Dion, considering what to make of him, this change from depression to subservience was surprising, and he wasn't sure if it wasn't a proud remark, afterall Dion was the SP and wasn't used to being told what to do.

"And why is that?" he asked cautiously.

Dion nodded.

"Obi tell me, why did you suggest the Geography lab?"

Obinna furrowed his brows in confusion, "The lab?"

Dion nodded.

"Well..." Obinna stuttered, but then drew confidence and spoke. "I was looking for somewhere that should have been less populated before the outbreak, not too far from here for easier access, and more secure... the Geography lab was the only place I could think of to fill those criteria in such short notice ".

Dion paused, considering it, then nodded.

" Feasible," he muttered. " At least you can still put your brain to use... albeit only a little bit of it".

Obinna, "..."

'What's with him?'

He felt Dion was behaving in a lofty manner which was quite rude and scathing.

Dion wasn't aware of his thoughts, he raised an index finger and continued talking.

"Obinna, your plan was great," he smirked. "But there was a value you didn't account for which has now thrown a wrench in that strategy of yours".

Obinna furrowed his brows tighter, "Oh yeah?"

"Oh yeah," Dion nodded.

"There was an activity scheduled for today in one of the facilities close by, think thoroughly," he smiled. "And by my calculations, it must have caused some zombies to have flooded that area you just mentioned".

'Activity?'

Obinna frowned.

" Do you know what's this activity?"

Obinna's frowned.

He furrowed his eyes in concentration, thinking, his mind analyzing the activities that had occurred prior to the outbreak.

A moment later, he was just about to give up and demand the answer when the junior student beside him jumped up excitedly.
