Chapter 14:
The journey to the Riftspire Mountains was fraught with challenges. The terrain shifted from the scorching sands of the desert to rocky cliffs and jagged peaks. As Kieran, Alina, and their bonded beasts ascended the steep trails, the air grew thinner, and an unnatural stillness hung over the landscape.
The dragon scale pulsed faintly in Kieran's pack, its rhythm steady yet subdued. The third artifact, the black shard, remained silent, but its presence felt like a weight pressing on Kieran's soul.
"Are we close?" Kieran asked, glancing at Alina.
She nodded, her auburn hair catching the faint light of the setting sun. "The library is hidden within the highest peak. The Guardians used to protect it, but after the fall of the Order…" She trailed off, her expression somber.
Nyx padded silently beside Kieran, her golden eyes scanning the path ahead. Lyric, Alina's silver-furred wolf-beast, moved with equal caution.
"We'll find it," Kieran said, more to himself than to Alina. "We have to."
After hours of climbing, they reached a plateau where ancient stone doors were carved into the mountainside. Symbols similar to those on the artifacts were etched into the surface, glowing faintly as Kieran approached.
"This is it," Alina said, her voice hushed.
Kieran placed his hand on the door, feeling the cool stone under his fingers. The dragon scale in his pack pulsed in response, and the doors groaned as they began to open.
Inside was a vast library, its walls lined with towering shelves filled with ancient tomes and scrolls. Crystals embedded in the ceiling cast a soft, ethereal light over the chamber.
"Welcome, Keeper," a voice echoed through the space.
Kieran froze, his hand instinctively reaching for the dragon scale. From the shadows emerged a spectral figure—a Guardian, clad in shimmering armor that seemed to shift between solid and translucent.
"Who are you?" Kieran asked.
"I am Aetherion, the last Guardian of the Riftspire Library," the figure said. "I have been waiting for you."
Aetherion led them to a central chamber where a massive, glowing map of the rift realms hovered in the air.
"The artifacts you seek are fragments of a seal," Aetherion explained. "Long ago, the rift realms were unified, but their power was too great. To prevent their destruction, the Guardians created a seal to divide them, locking away the shadow that threatened to consume all."
Kieran frowned. "But the seal is breaking, isn't it?"
Aetherion nodded gravely. "Yes. The artifacts are the key to reforging the seal, but they can also be used to destroy it. If the shadow is released, it will devour not only the rift realms but your world as well."
Nyx growled softly, her ears flattening. Kieran felt her unease through their bond and placed a reassuring hand on her side.
"So Malgrave wants to break the seal," Alina said. "What can we do to stop him?"
Aetherion turned to Kieran. "You must gather all five artifacts and bring them to the Nexus—the heart of the rift realms. Only there can the seal be reforged. But beware: the shadow will try to corrupt you, and Malgrave is not the only threat you face."
As they prepared to leave the library, Aetherion handed Kieran a small, glowing crystal. "This will guide you to the fourth artifact," he said. "But be warned: the path will test not just your strength but the strength of your bond."
Kieran nodded, gripping the crystal tightly. "We'll make it."
But as they turned to leave, the room darkened, and the air grew heavy. A chilling laugh echoed through the chamber, and Malgrave's voice filled the space.
"So, the Keeper learns the truth," he said, stepping from the shadows. His crimson-scaled beast snarled beside him. "But you won't leave here alive."
Kieran drew the dragon scale, its light flaring brightly. "We'll see about that."
The chamber erupted into chaos as Malgrave unleashed a wave of dark energy. Kieran and Nyx fought in tandem, their bond surging with power. Alina and Lyric joined the fray, their attacks precise and unyielding.
But as the battle raged, Kieran noticed something troubling—Alina hesitated when striking at Malgrave, her movements faltering.
"Alina, what are you doing?" Kieran shouted.
Before she could respond, Malgrave grinned. "Ah, the truth comes out," he said. "Tell him, Alina. Tell him why you're really here."
Kieran's heart sank as he turned to her. "What's he talking about?"
Alina's expression was conflicted, her gaze avoiding his. "I—"
Before she could finish, Malgrave unleashed another attack, forcing them to retreat.
Outside the library, Kieran confronted Alina. "What was that back there? Why didn't you strike?"
Alina looked away, her face pale. "There are things you don't understand, Kieran. Things I can't explain—yet."
Kieran's fists clenched. "I trusted you. Nyx trusted you. If you're hiding something, how can I know you're not working with him?"
Alina's voice wavered. "I'm not your enemy, Kieran. But there's more to this than you know. Please, give me a chance to prove myself."
Nyx growled softly, her golden eyes fixed on Alina with suspicion.
Kieran hesitated, torn between anger and the faint hope that Alina was telling the truth. Finally, he nodded curtly.
"One chance. That's all you get"
