The Counterstrike

The party over Riverton wasn't going to last long. The note left on Sophie's doorstep wasn't just a threat—it was the start of their revenge.

It started subtly. Sophie noticed odd discrepancies in her emails, canceled meetings she hadn't requested, and whispers of rumors that made no sense. Ethan's business deals were suddenly scrutinized, contracts delayed or voided for dubious reasons. Tension in their lives, which had momentarily eased after their victory, began to mount again.

We knew this was going to hurt," Ethan told Sophie one night, trying to sound more calm than he actually was. "They're beat up, but they're far from over. They're threatening to scare us off."

Sophie leaned her shoulders against the counter, fidgeting. "It's not just threat intimidation, Ethan. They're going for our social isolation. The credibility that helps them break would only give them strength if they're allowed to stay unopposed.

Ethan nodded grimly. "Then we don't let them. We fight smarter."

The Leaks Begin

A week later, the first major blow came. A tabloid published a devastating expose about Sophie. It had her making up evidence against Riverton out of pure self-interest. The article was riddled with out-and-out lies, combined with doctored pictures and "witness" statements that portrayed Sophie as manipulative opportunist.

The fallout was immediate. Sophie's phone was inundated with calls from reporters and angry strangers. Social media erupted with debates about her character, some defending her but others condemning her based on the fabricated story.

"I can't believe this," Sophie said, her voice trembling as she scrolled through the hateful comments. "They're trying to destroy everything we've worked for."

"They can try," Ethan said, his jaw set. "But we'll prove the truth."

The Plan to Fight Back

Ethan reached out to Clara, who had been quietly working behind the scenes since the gala. Clara's network of whistleblowers and allies had grown, bolstered by the fallout from the Riverton revelations.

"We knew they'd try to discredit us," Clara said in a late-night meeting in Ethan's office. "But we can use this to our advantage. If they're spreading lies, it means they're scared. And scared people make mistakes."

Sophie nodded, a spark of hope igniting in her chest. "So, what's our move?"

"Counter the narrative," Clara said. "We'll expose the leaks as false, and we'll find out who's behind them. Every lie they tell, we'll hit them with twice as much truth."

Marcus, who had joined the call from his secure location, chimed in. "I can help track the source of the leaks. If we trace them back to Riverton, we can prove they're behind this smear campaign."

A Dangerous Discovery

As Marcus worked to uncover the origin of the leaks, Sophie and Ethan focused on repairing their public image. Sophie gave interviews to trusted journalists, carefully explaining her side of the story and providing evidence to refute the false claims.

But Riverton wasn't done.

One evening, Sophie returned home alone. She found a black SUV idling at the corner of her street, with tinted windows. Even when Sophie parked and entered her building, the driver didn't budge.

Locking the door behind her, Sophie's heart kept racing. She picked up her phone and called Ethan.

"There's a car outside," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I think they're watching me."

Ethan cursed under his breath. "I'll be there in ten minutes. Don't open the door for anyone."

Sophie hung up and moved to the window, peeking through the blinds. The SUV was still there, its headlights off but the engine running.

A soft knock at the door made her jump.

"Sophie, it's me," Ethan called out from the other side.

She went running towards the door and opened it. Relief crossed her face as soon as she saw the familiar face.

"They're escalating," Ethan said after he stepped inside. "We need to be more careful."

The Trap Unfolds

A few days later, Marcus delivered a breakthrough. He had traced the leaks to a private server owned by one of Riverton's shell companies. But there was more—Marcus had uncovered a pattern in Riverton's digital activity, revealing that they were planning something big.

"They're organizing a massive PR campaign," Marcus said. "They're trying to bury the real story under an avalanche of propaganda."

Sophie frowned. "How do we stop them?"

Marcus hesitated. "There is one way. I can hack into their servers directly and release the rest of their secrets. But it's risky. If they catch on, they'll know exactly who's behind it."

Ethan's face darkened. "They already know. They're targeting us anyway. We can't let them get away with this."

The Final Play

The plan was set. While Marcus prepared for the hack, Sophie and Ethan worked with Clara to gather allies—journalists, activists, and even former Riverton employees who had turned against the organization.

The night of the operation, the tension was palpable. Marcus worked from his secure location, while Sophie and Ethan coordinated with Clara to ensure the information would be distributed the moment Marcus breached Riverton's servers.

Hours passed in tense silence until Marcus finally spoke through the comms.

"I'm in."

A flurry of activity followed as Marcus downloaded gigabytes of data, bypassing firewalls and encryption to uncover Riverton's darkest secrets.

But just as the files were being uploaded to secure servers, the lights in Marcus's office flickered, and his connection went dead.

A Price to Pay

Sophie and Ethan's phones buzzed simultaneously with an ominous message:

"You have gone too far. There are consequences for defying us."

They looked at each other, their faces sombre. Riverton's reprisal was no longer just a matter of reputation-it was personal.
