Chapter VIII - Deservers

"Wi-ill you be back so-soon?," Lia asked in a sobbing tone, holding him by the arm.

Geganio watched her for a few moments in silence, not quite understanding how she could address him with such eagerness when he could barely cope with the burden he felt. Guilt crushed any attempt at comfort on Lia's part.

He sighed. He believed flatly that she deserved someone more capable than him. On the other hand, he didn't want to expose her to the dangers of the world. She was young and beautiful, genuine and foolish, anything could happen to her in his absence, and for which reason he would leave some guards guarding his domus until his return.

"I hope so...."

Lia embraced him suddenly, clinging with an intensity that surprised him. Her body was warm, just like a light in the midst of a storm. But he barely reciprocated; he didn't think he deserved that unconditional love.
