Getting Along - Chapter 9

"Well for one, he's always looking at me and staring at my stuff, it's like he's never seen someone working diligently at school, isn't that weird?"

"Secondly, he's so loud and doesn't know when not to make a scene, I mean when I sputtered out at the test, he went on the clap and cheer as if it was some kind of joke."

Alma nodded slowly as she took in the information that Iris laid out to her, trying to see if there was really any foul play on the partner's part, or if Iris was really just overreacting to everything because of her worries and tense nature. She let her continue on before speaking.

"Third! He has the gall to argue with me, not only personally but in class! I begged for a switch in class but the professor said no. I'm stuck with a slacker for a partner, he doesn't even know how to cast spells! My rank will never improve with someone like him…argh it's so frustrating!"

Alma let out a small cough as she placed her hand under her chin and began to consider the multiple options as to what was going on in Iris' debacle, from a very unbiased point since she knew how Iris could get in situations like this.

"Don'tcha think you're being a bit critical of your partner? I mean, the guy sounds like he's trying to connect but you're not lettin' him."

"What? I thought you were on my side with these things!"

"I am on your side, it's just that it sounds like you're not giving him a fair shake…"

"Oh, so what would you possibly do to fix this problem? Hm?"

"I don't know, maybe talk to the guy? I mean he's probably having a rough time talking to the thorny princess I know."

"...Even so…"

"Listen, Iris, you can't get through these types of things alone, why not try to make the most of it? I mean, if your casting is fine as it usually is, you could make a better spotlight for yourself to get noticed by the higher-ups. Might as well make the most of the situation, no?"

Iris took a moment to consider the options, not fully realizing she'd been acting out of habit rather than actual want. She knew it was frustrating to see things turn out as they have and she realized that even though she was new to the school, he'd been the only person actively trying to communicate with her this whole time.
