Chapter 12: Island Life

By the time I woke up it was already dark. I quickly started to look around for the kids and Lucas before I spotted them seconds later right next to me. I was surprised by this but sighed in relief. Lucas was still awake right behind me and he seemed to have taken my job of being a blanket for the kids. He wasn't as big as me so his wings could only wrap around them while leaving a small gap which is why he used my body to block the wind from the gap.

He was staring at the stars before he slowly lowered his head and looked at me. "Why, good night" he said in a soothing and safe voice as he slowly smiled a soft smile. The moonlight as if it was attracted by his already white body shone onto him making him glow softly with a faint white blue hue. His amber eyes twinkled with a soft almost comforting reassurance, as if they were telling me everything would be OK.

I was stunned, he looked almost ethereal. I stared at him for about two minutes before Lucas said "you ok?" With a slightly confused and worried expression plastered on his face.

I snapped out of my daze as I quickly shook my head from side to side. I then answered "ya, I'm fine. Thanks" before I looked back at him. I then thought -man, I kind of regret choosing a night fury. I could have been white and pretty- with a somewhat sad expression starting to slowly show on my face.

Lucas seemed to quickly notice my small change as he asked "you sure your ok, you can tell me if anything is wrong you know" and with that I quickly turned my head away, trying to avoid eye contact. -how can I tell him I'm jealous of his pretty white dragon- I thought as I did my utmost to avoid eye contact with the moon's incarnation.

Lucas was generally worried but he couldn't get up to confront me as he was holding the sleeping kids. I then slightly cough before looked at him again and saying "I'm really fine, I just… thought of something" with slight hesitation presentin my voice. Seeing that Lucas was still concerned I shifted my body so I would be facing him as I stayed lying down.

Before he could ask another question, I changed the subject asking "so, what happened today? What did I miss?". This seem to work as Lucas began looking around, even replied "well nothing much, everyone was busy exploring all the biomes that were present, and deciding on where their houses should be". I nodded my head at this before I started looking around, seeing the forest shrouded in a peaceful blue light.

"it's quite beautiful here" I said, taking in the still pond and the slightly blowing wind that moved through the trees and their leaves. Lucas nodded at this, and then he said "so where do you prefer to live?" With a bit of excitement present in his tone. A small smile spread across face as I looked at him and said "I look like a bat, I wanna live in a cave" with a slight chuckle.

Lucas nodded his head seriously, and then said "since you're bat do you have echo location?" With a playful tone. My smile deepened and I narrowed my eyes and said "maybe, watch this" before I opened my mouth, pointed it at a tree as I close my eyes. I then tried to mimic how bat's did echo location, not expecting anything to happen but to my surprise it did work.

Once I got the images in my head, I quickly snapped open my eyes as my face contorted into that of disbelief. Lucas, seeing my sudden response questioned "what? What happened?" With clear concern in his voice. I slowly turned my head towards him, then back at the tree and whispered "no way" with clear disbelief in my tone.

Lucas seems even more confused than he was previously as he looked at a tree and back at me then said "what? Did something happen? Did you sense something? Is there an actual creature nearby?" With concern being more and more present with each question.

I didn't look back at him and said "no, no I'm fine. Is just" I paused, looked at his face which was confused, then continued "I think I actually have echolocation" with clear disbelief on my face. Lucas paused before his face shifted into that of surprise and said "really!?". I nodded my head then I looked back at the tree and said "I'm going to try it one more time, it may have just been a fluke" and Lucas nodded at this.

Lucas began to watch me intensely as I slowly closed my eyes and opened my mouth, pointing it at a different tree before doing the same thing as I did before. The echo location seem to be triggered, and I saw the images in my head. Then I snapped open my eyes and looked at Lucas "fudge, I really do have echolocation" with a bit of surprise and excitement in my voice.

Lucas smiled and said "do you think I have it too?" Before he turned towards the tree I used with a look of excitement on his face. I wasn't too sure how to answer that as I truly didn't know so I said "i'm not sure you should try to see if you can, though" with a bit of excitement and expectation in my voice.

He nodded his head excitedly then closed his eyes and opened his mouth towards the tree. A few seconds passed and nothing happened, I could tell that Lucas's excitement was slowly fading with the passage of time. After about 20 minutes of him just sitting there with his mouth open and eyes closed trying to use echolocation, he slowly close his mouth and opened his eyes with a disappointed expression.

Then said with disappointments clearly present in his voice "I guess I'm not bat enough to have echolocation" I slightly chuckled at this before I moved my tail and patted his back repeatedly, trying to comfort him. His face looked grieved as if someone had wronged him in some way shape or form. I then thought of something and said " there, there. You probably have something I don't. We are different species after all".

Lucas paused as he heard this before slowly looking at me with slight disappointment on his face before he quickly mask it with a smile and said "you're right". I noticed this, but didn't think much of it before I looked into the sky, spotting multiples stars. "aren't the stars beautiful tonight?" I asked trying to change the subject from echo location.

Lucas pause before he looked into the sky and said "you're right it is beautiful tonight" with a smile slowly stretching across his face. I shifted my head to be able to look at him from the corner of my eye, not focusing on the stars at all. I wanted to make sure that he was truly OK but without being too obvious about it.

Thanks to this I saw his expression change from that of admiring beauty to that of scrutinizing the sky with a somewhat confused look on his face. In my confusion I started paying attention to the sky again trying to see what he did. I then heard Lucas's voice from next to me as he said "do you see that?" with a hint of concern clearly present in his voice.

I was having a hard time spotting what he was seeing before asking "what am I supposed to be looking for?" as I shifted my head, trying to spot what he saw in the sky. He then looked at me, then use the tip of his wings to stop my head from moving before shifting them under my jaw and slowly moving my head up.

I followed along with what he was doing as I knew I probably wouldn't be able to find it on my own. Before long he stopped and lowered his wing to circle the baby dragons once again. I froze, scanning the sky from where he stopped me before I spotted something strange. There was a light in the sky that was clearly blinking though it was faint and hard to see.

My eyes widened at this before I looked at Lucas and asked "are you talking about that blinking light in the sky that looks almost like an airplane but doesn't move?". Lucas nodded in response to my question then looked up into the sky and said "stars don't naturally blink" with a hint of concern present in his voice.

I took a deep breath and then looked at Lucas and said "let's tell Mr. Garcia in the morning. I don't want to wake everyone up trying to find him" with uncertainty. Lucas nodded his head at this before he glanced up at the sky once more. -I can understand where his fear and anxiety comes from as if humans are truly on this planet and had advanced technology we might be in danger- I thought as I too, glanced up into the sky.

The night seem to pass incredibly slowly as me and Lucas kept glancing at the sky and talking to each other until morning finally. Me and Lucas waited until we could hear the bustling and calls of dragons on different islands. "Time to go" I said, as I got up and stretched. Lucas nodded at this as he began to open his wings and try to shake the children with his feet to wake them up.

I chuckle at this before I walked over and started rapidly tapping them on their faces. I focused more on Jay than the other two as I knew if I woke him up, he would wake the others up. Soon after my rapid tapping began, Jay began to squirm and hide his head under his feet as he tried to back away from my rapid tapping.

-it's no use- I thought with a wicked grin beginning to form on my face as I followed him back until he was off the dragons wing, and on the cold, hard ground with cold long strips of grass tickling his tail. He grounded as he started moving back onto the wing, but I stopped him with his swipe of my tail. "Oh no you don't" I said, as I pushed him into the grass and he tumbled rolling across the cold ground.

When Jay began to move, his eyes were already all the way open as he glared at me before he saw that the two others were still sleeping. "That's no fair" was written all over his face as he glanced at me, then back at the two sleeping dragons before he darted and rammed into Nikko.

Nikko tumbled off of the dragons wing along with Jay as they tumble through the grass. I chuckled at this, as I watched them immediately start fighting each other, biting each other's ears, feet, and tails. I then looked at the last sleeping dragon who was already starting to stir from the commotion. I slowly walked up to her before slowly, tapping the top of her head and saying "time to wake up" in a soothing voice.

Lucas laid there and watched as one by one the dragons got off his wing. The last to leave was Rah as she groggily got up and headed towards the small pond I threw Nikko and Jay in yesterday. Once she left, I turned my attention back to Lucas and said "once the kids are ready we will go find Mr. Garcia and report to him what we found". Lucas nodded at this and we both turned our heads towards the boys as they seem to have finished fighting and started heading towards the pond as well.

Once they passed us, we both got up and followed them ready to quench our thirst as well. Once we did, they followed me as I flew to the edge of the island, I was going to catch us some breakfast. Will you reach the edge of the islands is landed onto the ground as the others followed suit. I then turned around and said "you guys stay here, me and Lucas will take turns catching fish and watching you" as I looked at Lucas and he nodded in response.

And then opened my wings and took off into the sky before quickly diving into the ocean. It didn't take long for me to catch a fish before I took off from the water and flew back up towards the islands. Once I got to the top and landed, I dropped the Bluefish onto the ground and said "there is a whole school of these down there" with excitement in my voice.

Lucas's eyes lightened up before he nodded his head and jumped off the side of the island immediately diving down into the ocean. I chuckled at his antics before I move the fish with my nose towards the children. The fish proved too big for just one baby dragon to eat it alone so I picked the fish back up and broke it in half with my teeth, then spit both sides back out.

The fish was still pretty big, but was now suitable for two dragons to gobble each side up whole hole. Nikko and Rah got the fish before Jay as they quickly gobble up each side before looking at him with a trumpet smile. I chuckled at their antics before walking over to the edge and looking down still seeing no sign of Lucas.

This didn't bother me that much as catching fish was no easy matter as they swim away from you. A minute later, I saw Lucas springing out of the water with another Bluefish in his mouth, as he flew, he tried to stop the fish from flopping around as it kept shaking his head from the force, though he was unsuccessful and it flopped the whole way until he tossed it onto the ground.

I chuckled at his misfortune of catching a bigger fish than I did before. I grab the fish and bit it into three parts before tossing it in front of the children. Lucas watched as the three children quickly gobbled up each part and looked at him expectedly. He laughed nervously before turning to me as I watched him, I then dove off of the side of the cliff doing the same thing he did diving straight into the ocean.

The fish had started to move away from the spot that we were hunting in, so I had to swim a bit of ways before I could catch a fish. I then grabbed a smaller one before shooting myself back into the sky and onto the island. I bit the fish in half as Lucas been diving into the ocean. This went on for sometime as we filled the little dragon stomach up, then we hunted for ourselves filling our stomachs up before we stopped.

Lucas and I sat by a tree back where the pond was as we watched the little dragons play near the water. As I watched, I then remembered something as I jolted up onto my feet, Lucas jolted next to me in shock as he wasn't expecting my sudden outburst. I then looked at him and said "OMG, I forgot we had to tell Mr. Garcia about the blinking light from last night" in a somewhat panicked voice. Lucas blinked in surprised before he too jolted up and we both ran to the kids before we all set out on a journey to find Mr. Garcia on one of the islands.
