As the Uber driver drove me away from the hospital, Max's words repeated again and again in my head. “Are you in a rush to break things off with me so you can be free to have a new boyfriend?”
I frowned at that question, shaking my head as if he could see me now disapprovingly. My phone buzzed, and I checked to see if it was my boss, but it was Max again, apologizing for how he spoke to me and asking me if we could still be friends after the official breakup.
Would I ever be friends again with him? I doubted it, but for the sake of his peace of mind, I replied with a simple OK.
When I finally arrived home, I paid the driver in cash, and then called Ella, who was in the office. “Hey, babe! Lunch today?”
I sighed. “Can you cover for me? I will explain all later, I promise, but right now I need some time to unwind.”
“Oh shoot, does it have to do with Max’s surprise proposal yesterday?” She asked, ever so perceptive.
