ORIGIN: United States.
The urban legend of the Kidney Heist is one that has circulated globally, with its most common versions originating in the United States, particularly from Las Vegas, Nevada, in the 1990s.
The story involves a business traveler or tourist who, after a night of drinking or partying, wakes up in an unfamiliar hotel room or a bathtub filled with ice.
Groggy and disoriented, the victim discovers a note beside them with a warning: "Call 911 immediately."
When they do, the emergency responder's first question is often: "Is there a tube coming from your lower back?"
Upon checking, the victim indeed finds a surgical incision, and realises that their kidney has been surgically removed— harvested by a black-market organ trafficking ring.
The kidney is sold to desperate patients willing to pay lump sums of money equal to fortunes to save themselves.
While there are few verified cases resembling this exact scenario, the legend gained recognition and popularity due to email chains and online forums, spreading panic and influencing pop culture.
This urban legend remains one of the most infamous modern urban legends, one which shows you the horrors of waking up to realise that you've lost a body part.
It is from this story, a horror anthology series was acted (in one episode).
The title of the movie series is URBAN LEGENDS.
