CARMAN OF GREENOCK

ORIGIN: Greenock, Scotland.

The urban legend is about a driver of a horse-drawn cart who is said to haunt the fog-covered streets and rural roads surrounding Greenock.

The story dates back to the 19th century, during a time when carmen were common people in the town, transporting goods between ports and factories.

According to the legend, one particular carman vanished while making a late-night delivery.

Some say he was murdered for the cargo he carried, while others believe he met a tragic accident along the treacherous paths.

His body was never found, and his horse was later discovered wandering aimlessly, pulling behind it the cart splattered with blood.

Since then, travelers and locals have reported seeing a ghostly figure driving a horse-drawn cart through the misty roads.

Witnesses say that the spectral looking carman appears suddenly out of the fog with his face obscured from any onlooker's view by a wide-brimmed hat, while his eyes glow faintly.

Those who encounter him speak of a sudden change in the weather into a cold one.

It is said that if you meet the Carman of Greenock and he calls out to you, misfortune or death is sure to follow.
