BLACK COFFIN OF BARBADOS

ORIGIN: The Caribbean.

The Black Coffin of Barbados, is also referred to as the Chase Vault Mystery.

It is about a family tomb located in the Christ Church Parish Cemetery in Barbados, which became infamous in the early 19th century due to a long series of unexplained events.

The story began in 1807, when the Chase family bought the vault to bury a family member.

Over the next few years, the vault was used to inter several other dead members of the Chase family, each placed in a heavy lead coffin.

However, each time the tomb was reopened for a new burial, the living relatives noticed that the coffins inside had shifted far from from their original positions.

Some coffins were found standing upright and some were even leaning against the walls.

The vault was sealed with a heavy marble slab, which would require multiple men to move it.

Yet, the coffins continued to move every time the vault was reopened—---

… And there were no signs of tampering or forced entry.

The final straw came in 1819, when the tomb was opened to find the coffins had been violently tossed around.

In fear and panic, the family removed the bodies and reburied them elsewhere.

Then the vault was left permanently empty.

To this day, the mystery remains unsolved.

Locals believe the Chase Vault is cursed, and the legend has become a cornerstone of Barbadian folklore.
