ORIGIN: England
The urban legend of The Phantom Monks of York is one of the oldest and most alive ghost stories in England.
York, a city with a very layered (think Shrek) history dating back to Roman times, is often times considered to be one of the most haunted cities in the world.
The legend speaks of a group of ghost of monks who wander through the underground passages and old streets of York, especially near the Treasurer's House.
These robed figures have actually been seen as far back as centuries ago.
They are always wearing traditional hooded habits, covering their faces in its shadow, and move together very silently in procession.
Most times, they look like they are floating on air, as if they are walking on a ground level no one can see..
One of the most famous encounters with these creatures happened in the 1950s when a plumber, working in the basement of the Treasurer's House, reported to his superiors about seeing a line of Roman soldiers marching through the walls.
Among them were hooded monks carrying torches, chanting quietly.
