DROWNED SAMURAI

ORIGIN: Japan

The story has different versions across Japan, mostly linked to rivers, lakes, or coastal areas where battles or betrayals happened in the past.

One version tells of a dishonored samurai who, after failing his lord, chose to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) in a river rather than face public execution.

However, because he died dishonorably in the water, his soul never found peace.

His drenched ghost, still clothed in ancient armor, appears near rivers and lakes, whispering warnings or issuing battle challenges to lone travelers.

Those who ignore him sometimes disappear, only to be found drowned days later.

Another version of the legend is that of a samurai who was betrayed by his allies and thrown into the sea with his armor still on to make sure that he would sink and die a slow and suffocating death.

His ghost now haunts fishermen and swimmers, dragging them into the deepest paths of the waters as a means of revenge for his untimely death.

If you ever hear the sound of splashing when no one is there, or see wet footprints leading nowhere, the Drowned Samurai is near—
