ORIGIN: RUSSIA
This is an urban legend that tells of a secret Soviet-era scientific study that was conducted in the late 1940s.
According to the story, five political prisoners were subjected to an experiment in which they were kept awake for fifteen days through the use of a powerful stimulant gas.
The researchers aimed to test the effects of prolonged sleep deprivation and determine whether humans could go actually without rest forever.
For the first few days, the test subjects were okay and engaged in normal conversations.
However, as time passed, their behavior became increasingly disturbing.
By the fifth day, they started showing signs of paranoia and stopped talking to one another.
By the ninth day, they began screaming uncontrollably, smearing their feces on the walls, and tearing pages from books.
Shortly after all these absolute, complete silence filled the chamber.
When the researchers finally opened the sealed room, they discovered a horrifying scene:
The test subjects had mutilated themselves with their bare hands, and had ripped out their own flesh and organs while remaining creepily conscious.
When doctors try to sedate them so they would sleep, they resisted violently, screaming and shouting repeatedly, on and on:
"We must stay awake!"
The last surviving subject whispered the words:
"We are you. We are the madness that lurks within you all."
Though this is purely fictional, the story has become one of the most terrifying and scary internet horror stories.
