"How much farther?" Li Tian asked, his voice breaking the oppressive silence. The words echoed unnaturally, bouncing off the walls and returning distorted.
The figure's glowing eyes turned briefly toward him. "Not far. But distance is irrelevant. What lies ahead will test more than your strength—it will test your will."
Li Tian's footsteps slowed. The void stirred, pulsing faster as if sensing what awaited them. The remnants of his last battle still clung to him—aching muscles, a pounding headache, and the lingering fear of losing control. He tightened his grip, his fingers curling until his knuckles turned white. He couldn't afford to falter now.
They reached a massive stone archway carved with intricate patterns that seemed to shift as Li Tian looked at them. The symbols glowed faintly, pulsating like a heartbeat. Beyond the arch, the tunnel opened into a vast chamber, its ceiling lost in shadow. The air hummed with power, and the void within him resonated in response.
"This is it?" Li Tian whispered.
The figure nodded. "The heart of the abyss."
Li Tian stepped forward, but the moment his foot crossed the threshold, the chamber came alive. Runes flared along the walls, illuminating jagged pillars and a circular platform at the center. Chains hung from the ceiling, their ends anchored in the stone floor. Atop the platform stood a pedestal, and resting upon it was a pulsing, obsidian orb.
The void within Li Tian roared, surging toward the orb like a moth to flame. He staggered, clutching his chest as the energy threatened to tear free. The pull was unbearable, as if the orb called to the void inside him, demanding unity.
"Steady yourself!" the figure barked. "This is the source—the heart of the void's power. If you lose control here, it will devour you."
Li Tian gritted his teeth, forcing the void back. Sweat poured down his face as he fought to keep his focus. "What do I do?"
"You claim it," the figure said. "Or it claims you."
The chains rattled as the shadows began to move. Figures emerged from the darkness, their twisted forms barely human. Their eyes glowed red, and their mouths twisted into grotesque grins.
"Guardians," the figure said grimly. "They exist to keep the unworthy from reaching the heart."
Li Tian raised his hands, the void sparking to life around him. The guardians moved as one, their bodies melting into the shadows and reforming closer to him. He lashed out, tendrils of void energy crackling through the air and slicing into the nearest attacker. It dissolved, but the others pressed forward, undeterred.
"Focus your strikes!" the figure commanded. "Do not waste energy!"
Li Tian fell into a rhythm, the void flowing through him as he struck down one guardian after another. But for each one he destroyed, two more seemed to take its place. His vision blurred as exhaustion set in, and the void's hunger clawed at his mind, begging to be released.
"Yield to it," the figure urged. "Use its power fully, or you will fall!"
Li Tian hesitated. The last time he'd given in, he had nearly lost himself. But this time, there was no choice. With a roar, he let the void surge outward, the energy exploding from him in a wave that swept through the chamber. The guardians screamed as they were torn apart, their forms disintegrating into shadow.
When the light faded, Li Tian fell to one knee, his chest heaving. The void was calm now, but its presence felt heavier, more entrenched, like chains coiled tightly around his soul.
The figure stepped forward. "You are learning," it said. "But your trial is not over."
Li Tian looked up, his gaze falling on the pedestal and the orb. The chains around it rattled, and the shadows pulsed as though alive. Dark tendrils seeped outward, testing the air like serpents tasting blood.
"What now?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Now you claim it," the figure said, "or it destroys you."
Li Tian rose to his feet, his body trembling but his resolve firm. He stepped toward the pedestal, the void humming louder with each step. The chains snapped taut as he reached out, their runes flaring in warning. The orb's surface rippled, and a low hum filled the chamber.
The void inside him rebelled, pressing outward as if drawn by an unseen force. The chains shuddered, and cracks formed along the floor. The air vibrated with power, and Li Tian's fingers trembled as they hovered above the orb.
"Remember what brought you here," the figure said, its voice softer now but no less commanding. "Control the void, or let it consume you."
Li Tian's breath steadied. He reached out and grasped the orb.
Darkness erupted, and the world vanished.
Pain stabbed through him as the void surged, wrapping around his mind like a vice. Images flashed—faces he didn't recognize, places he had never seen. Voices whispered promises of power, but beneath them lurked something darker.
Li Tian screamed, forcing the void back. The orb pulsed in his hands, and light flared outward, pushing against the shadows. The chains shattered, and the chamber trembled.
When the light faded, Li Tian stood alone, the orb now fused to his palm, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat.
The figure stepped forward. "You have taken it," it said. "But whether you control it—or it controls you—remains to be seen."
Li Tian stared at the orb, its energy thrumming through him. He had claimed the void's heart, but the battle had only just begun.
