I refused to forgive her and insisted to the authorities that she should receive a severe punishment.

Once she was taken into custody, Jeremiah and I were the only ones left in the questioning area.

The combined remorse from two lifetimes nearly overwhelmed his ability to think clearly.

He was so upset that his whole body shook as he stood up and then fell to his knees in front of me.

"I'm sorry, I was responsible for the child's death, it's my fault, and I take back all the mean things I said to you earlier."

"I know I have no right to ask for your forgiveness. Can you do one thing for me? In all our time knowing each other, this is my only request. Please save a spot next to my child's grave. I want to be laid to rest with my child."

I looked at him with an unclear sense of what was to come.

But I didn't give him a direct answer.

After finishing the paperwork, I departed from the police station.
