I rose clumsily, my movements particularly rigid due to my injury.
Clutching a bag over my abdomen, I gazed at him with a mocking expression.
"Darling? How strange that an orphan still receives such attention from the esteemed rescue team leader."
"As expected of a man lauded across social media. It's truly moving. But your concern is misplaced. The child is no more, lost on the day of the blaze."
"Oh, and I've yet to offer my congratulations. Lovers turned newlyweds. Though I wonder how long your marital bliss will last. Savor it. If you wish to see your wife again, it'll be through prison bars."
The man's brow furrowed, his features contorting with intense rage.
"Zenith, must you be so bitter in your speech? I'm the captain, and saving lives is my duty. I didn't blame you for starting the fire that day and I rescued Yvonne for your sake. Now you're accusing me?"
"How dare you address me like that! You have no right!"
"What's this about a baby? Did you bring some sort of fake pregnancy device?"
"Listen, I'm the child's biological father. That's an undeniable fact! Even if you bore the child and hid it from me, I'll fight you for custody!"
I was stunned to discover that after our long marriage, this was how he truly perceived me.
This union was nothing short of absurd!
After his outburst, he assisted Yvonne to her feet and approached me to examine my stomach.
The girl let out a well-timed cry of distress, immediately diverting his attention.
"Are you alright? Where does it hurt? Perhaps I should take you to the hospital for an examination? You've only just recovered, so we can't be careless."
"I'm okay. Don't be cross with her. It's all my doing. I shouldn't have gone home that day and upset her. Had I known she disliked me, I would have kept my distance. It's entirely my fault."
Tears of self-pity trickled down her face.
Jeremiah's eyes instantly reddened with concern.
Their intimate exchange, as if they were alone, made me feel sick to my stomach.
