Chapter 3: Red City
As the cart drew closer to Red City, Da Cai's heart raced. The towering walls loomed above them, a testament to human ingenuity and strength. Each brick seemed to carry the weight of history, and the walls' crimson hue reflected the city's name. At 10 meters thick and 30 meters tall, the structure was both imposing and awe-inspiring. Soldiers in polished armor patrolled the ramparts, their presence a constant reminder of the city's vigilance.
Uncle Yun, noticing Da Cai's wonder, said, "These walls have stood for centuries, protecting the city from invaders and beasts alike. But remember, Red City's strength doesn't lie in its walls alone."
"It's under the jurisdiction of Zhang Zhao, isn't it?" Da Cai asked, recalling the stories he'd heard.
Uncle Yun nodded. "Yes, Zhang Zhao, a cultivator at the peak of the Vein Expansion Realm, rules this city. His strength and wisdom have kept Red City thriving. Beneath him are his five leading men, also in the Vein Expansion Realm, though they are far from his level. Together, they ensure the city's security."
As they reached the city gates, Da Cai felt a palpable shift in the air. The soldiers stationed there exuded auras of discipline and power, their eyes sharp and their movements precise. Each soldier's mere presence seemed to demand respect.
"Line up properly!" barked one of the guards, his voice carrying over the bustling crowd. The people obeyed quickly, shuffling into neat lines. The gate's inspection process was strict but efficient, a testament to the city's orderliness.
When it was their turn, the guard glanced at Uncle Yun and Da Cai. "Fifty copper each," he said curtly. Uncle Yun reached into his pouch and handed over a small handful of coins without complaint. Da Cai couldn't help but note how significant the sum was.
"Fifty copper is no small amount," he murmured to himself, thinking of the economy Uncle Yun had explained. For most families, earning ten silver a year was a challenge. The gate fee alone could equate to days of labor.
The guard stepped aside, and the two entered the city. The sight that greeted them was unlike anything Da Cai had ever seen. Bustling streets teemed with life, merchants hawked their wares, and the aroma of cooked food wafted through the air. Towering buildings lined the roads, their designs a mix of practicality and elegance. The city was alive, vibrant, and chaotic all at once.
Uncle Yun guided the cart through the streets, eventually stopping at a modest inn. The innkeeper greeted them with a polite smile, and they secured a small room for the night. The room was simple but clean, with two straw beds and a small table.
"Rest well tonight," Uncle Yun said as they settled in. "Tomorrow is the day of the entrance examination. You'll need your strength."
Da Cai nodded, though his mind was a swirl of emotions. Excitement, nervousness, and a flicker of doubt coursed through him. Lying on his bed that night, he gazed at the wooden ceiling, his thoughts consumed by what the next day would bring.
