Chapter 38: Fractures in the Void
The golden thread led Mongu out of the stabilized chamber and into the unknown. The air around him felt heavier as he walked, a chilling reminder that the closer he came to the Core of the Unraveling, the more distorted reality became.
The environment shifted unpredictably. One moment, Mongu stood in a vast desert where the sands glimmered like shattered glass; the next, he found himself surrounded by towering cliffs suspended in midair, gravity defying all logic. The threads of fate in this realm were frayed, flickering with instability.
His paws padded cautiously over the uneven ground as his senses stayed on high alert. Every sound, every flicker of movement, could signal a new threat.

The Arrival of a Wounded Ally
A sudden crash echoed through the strange terrain, followed by a pained cry. Mongu darted toward the noise, his golden energy sparking around him. As he approached, he saw a figure collapsed on the ground—a humanoid warrior clad in battered silver armor, their weapon shattered beside them.
The warrior's face was pale, their body trembling as dark tendrils writhed around them, trying to consume their essence. Mongu recognized the signs immediately: corruption from the Unraveling.
Without hesitation, he leapt forward, his golden energy flaring as he severed the tendrils with a sharp burst of light. The warrior gasped, their breathing ragged as they looked up at Mongu.
"You… saved me?" the warrior asked, their voice weak but filled with disbelief.
"You're hurt," Mongu said, his tone gentle but firm. "Stay still. I'll help you."
The golden thread around him shifted, wrapping around the warrior and stabilizing their fraying essence. The tendrils of corruption dissolved, and the warrior's color began to return.
"Thank you," they said, sitting up slowly. "I am called Kael. I was part of a vanguard sent to hold back the Unraveling, but…" They gestured to the shattered weapon and the darkened sky. "We underestimated its power."
Mongu nodded. "You're lucky to have survived. The Unraveling's forces don't leave loose ends."
Kael's eyes widened as they looked more closely at Mongu. "You… you're not like the others I've seen. What are you?"
"I'm Mongu," he said simply. "And I'm going to stop the Unraveling."
Kael stared at him for a moment, then laughed weakly. "A small dog taking on the end of existence? That's… unexpected."
Mongu's gaze hardened. "I've heard worse. You can come with me if you want, but I don't have time to convince you."
Kael hesitated, then nodded. "If you're going toward the Core, you'll need all the help you can get. I'll fight with you—if I survive long enough to be useful."
---
The Riftborn Guardian
As Mongu and Kael pressed forward, the terrain grew more unstable. Chasms of void energy opened and closed without warning, forcing them to leap and dodge constantly. The golden thread ahead flickered erratically, as if struggling to navigate the chaos.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them shook violently, and a towering figure emerged from one of the chasms. It was a Riftborn Guardian, a being made entirely of shifting void energy, its form constantly warping.
The Guardian's voice boomed, distorted and otherworldly. "You do not belong here. Turn back, or be consumed."
Mongu stepped forward, his golden energy radiating. "I don't have time for warnings. Move, or I'll make you move."
The Guardian's form shifted, its energy coalescing into a massive weapon—a jagged blade of pure void. It swung the blade down with incredible force, aiming to cleave them both in half.
Kael lunged to the side, rolling into a defensive stance despite their injuries. Mongu darted forward, golden light clashing against the void energy as he blocked the attack. Sparks flew as the opposing forces collided, the sheer intensity causing the air around them to ripple.
"You cannot defeat me," the Guardian said. "I am bound to the will of the Unraveling. I am eternal."
Mongu gritted his teeth. "We'll see about that."
---
The Fight for Survival
The battle was relentless. The Guardian's form shifted constantly, making it nearly impossible to predict its movements. Each swing of its void blade left behind trails of destructive energy, and its attacks grew more ferocious with each passing moment.
Kael joined the fray, wielding a fragment of their shattered weapon as best they could. Though their strength was limited, their strikes created openings for Mongu to exploit.
Mongu focused on the golden thread guiding him, allowing it to direct his movements. He darted in and out of the Guardian's reach, striking at its core whenever an opportunity arose.
The Guardian roared, its body destabilizing as Mongu's attacks began to take effect. "You… are an anomaly… You disrupt the flow of the void…"
"That's the idea," Mongu said, leaping into the air. He channeled all his energy into a single, powerful strike aimed directly at the Guardian's core.
The golden light pierced through the void energy, and the Guardian let out a deafening scream. Its form collapsed inward, imploding in a burst of light and shadow.
As the dust settled, Kael leaned heavily on their broken weapon, breathing hard. "You really are something else," they said, looking at Mongu with a mixture of awe and disbelief.
"We don't have time to celebrate," Mongu said, his voice steady. "The Unraveling is still ahead."
Kael nodded, pushing themselves upright. "Lead the way. I'll follow."
---
A Glimpse of the Core
The golden thread resumed its course, leading them deeper into the fractured landscape. As they walked, Mongu felt an oppressive energy growing stronger. The air became colder, and the light around them dimmed.
Finally, they reached a ridge overlooking a vast, swirling vortex of darkness. At the center of the vortex was a pulsating mass of energy—the Core of the Unraveling.
Kael shuddered. "So that's it. The heart of the chaos."
Mongu's golden energy flared brighter, pushing back the oppressive force. "We're closer than ever. But the hardest part is still ahead."
As they prepared to descend into the vortex, a new presence emerged—one that radiated an aura even stronger than the Sentinel or the Guardian.
A figure stepped forward, cloaked in both light and shadow, its form impossible to fully comprehend. Its voice was calm but filled with authority.
"You have come far, Mongu," it said. "But this is where your journey ends. I am the Arbiter, and I will not let you reach the Core."
Mongu's golden energy surged as he faced the new adversary. "We'll see about that."
The stage was set for the next battle, and Mongu knew that this would be his greatest challenge yet.
