The morning started like any other. I was on top of the world, ready to tackle the day. My plans were set, my outfit was sharp, and for once, I felt like I could finally breathe. Walking up to my office felt like walking into my destiny I sped through the city like a madwoman, the streets blurring around me. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tight my knuckles were white, and my heart pounded in my chest. Tears streamed down my face, hot and relentless, but I didn't care. There was only one place I needed to be right now.
Maxwell Hart's company.
---
I parked haphazardly outside, barely cutting the engine before throwing the car door open. My heels clicked loudly against the polished marble floor as I stormed into the building.
"Good morning, ma'am—" the receptionist began, but I didn't even glance at her.
"Where is Maxwell?" I demanded, my voice shaky but fierce.
"Ma'am, he's in a meeting—"
"I don't care!" I snapped, pushing past her.
---
The secretary stood up, trying to block my path. "Miss Ava, you can't just barge in—"
"Watch me," I said coldly, shoving the door to Maxwell's office open without hesitation.
He was sitting behind his massive oak desk, looking up from some paperwork. His brow furrowed in confusion as he took in my disheveled appearance.
"Ava?" he said, standing up. "What's going on?"
---
I slammed the door shut behind me, my body trembling. "Everything," I choked out, my voice breaking. "Everything is falling apart, Maxwell."
He stepped toward me, concern etched on his face. "Ava, calm down. What happened?"
I couldn't calm down. My emotions were spiraling out of control. "Lucas! That snake! He stole my company, Maxwell. He stole everything!"
Maxwell's expression darkened instantly. "What are you talking about? Start from the beginning."
---
I paced the room, my hands shaking as I tried to piece my thoughts together. "I went to the office this morning, and the security wouldn't let me in. They said Lucas owns the company now. Lucas! And Derek—oh, God, Derek betrayed me! He faked the documents, Maxwell. He gave me fake documents and kept the company in Lucas's name!"
I turned to face him, my eyes filled with tears. "Do you understand what this means? Everything I've worked for, everything I've sacrificed—it's gone. Just like that."
---
Maxwell cursed under his breath, running a hand through his hair. "That bastard," he muttered. "And Derek? I thought he was loyal to you."
"So did I!" I cried, my voice rising. "But apparently, money talks. Lucas promised him an empire, and he sold me out. He sold me out, Maxwell!"
My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the chair in front of his desk, burying my face in my hands. "I trusted him. I trusted both of them. And now, I have nothing."
---
Maxwell crouched in front of me, his voice firm but gentle. "Ava, listen to me. You're not going to let them get away with this. Do you hear me?"
I looked up at him, my tears blurring my vision. "How, Maxwell? How am I supposed to fight back when they've already taken everything?"
He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Because you're Ava Sinclair. You don't give up. You don't back down. And you sure as hell don't let people like Lucas and Derek win."
---
I sniffled, wiping my tears away. "I don't even know where to start."
Maxwell stood, his jaw set with determination. "You start by regrouping. We'll figure out a way to expose them, Ava. I'll help you. Whatever you need, I'm here."
I nodded, trying to steady my breathing. "Thank you, Maxwell."
"Don't thank me yet," he said, his eyes narrowing. "We've got a war to win."
For the first time that day, a flicker of hope sparked within me. I wasn't alone in this fight. And I wasn't going to let Lucas and Derek win.
until everything went sideways.
As I approached the gate, the security guard stepped forward, blocking my way.
"Good morning, ma'am," he said in that flat, robotic tone.
I waved him off. "Good morning. Open the gate; I'm late for a meeting."
He didn't move. Not an inch.
"Sorry, ma'am, but I can't let you in."
I laughed, even though there was nothing funny about this. "What are you talking about? You can't let me in? Since when does my employee decide where I can and can't go?"
"I'm under new orders, ma'am," he said, his eyes not even meeting mine.
My heart started to race. "Orders? Whose orders?"
"Mr. Lucas Clarkes."
The name hit me like a hammer. I froze for a moment, then blinked as the words sank in.
"You must be joking," I said, my voice sharp. "Let me through now, or you'll be out of a job by noon."
The guard didn't flinch. "I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't."
And that's when I saw him—Lucas walking out of my building, with Derek trailing behind like a dog. The smug look on his face sent a surge of rage coursing through me.
"What the hell is going on here?" I demanded, storming toward them. My heels clicked against the pavement like gunshots.
Lucas smirked. "Ah, Ava. I see you've discovered the change of plans."
"Derek," I snapped, ignoring Lucas. "Explain. Right now."
Derek avoided my gaze, but Lucas seemed to relish the moment.
"Derek," Lucas said mockingly, "why don't you tell her? After all, you were her trusted confidant."
My stomach churned. "Derek?" I said again, my voice quieter but shaking with barely contained fury. "What. Is. Happening?"
Derek sighed, finally looking at me. "When you came to me a few months ago asking to transfer the company ownership to your name, I… I reached out to Lucas to confirm if he was aware of it."
My heart sank.
"What?" I whispered, my voice trembling.
"He said he didn't know," Derek continued, his voice calm, almost detached. "So, I… I gave you fake documents. The ownership never actually transferred. The company is still legally in Lucas's name."
It felt like the ground had been pulled out from beneath me. My ears rang, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe.
"Fake documents?" I repeated, my voice barely above a whisper. "You… you betrayed me?"
Derek didn't even flinch. "Lucas made me an offer. He promised me a share in the empire. Money talks, Ava."
I turned to Lucas, who was watching me with that same smug expression. "You slimy, backstabbing bastard," I hissed.
Lucas chuckled, crossing his arms. "Careful, Ava. That's no way to speak to the owner of this company."
"This is my company!" I shouted, my voice cracking with emotion. "I built this. I sacrificed everything for this!"
"Not anymore," Lucas said simply, the amusement in his voice making me sick.
"You're disgusting," I spat, turning back to Derek. "I trusted you. I trusted you with my life, Derek. How could you do this to me?"
He shrugged, completely unfazed. "It's just business."
"Business?" I repeated, my voice rising. "This isn't business; this is treachery!"
I turned back to the guard, who still stood there, unmoving. "I'm not leaving," I said firmly. "Let me in."
"I can't, ma'am," he said again, and something inside me snapped.
"You're fired!" I screamed, tears welling in my eyes. "All of you fired!"
Lucas laughed again, that infuriating sound grating on my last nerve.
"Oh, Ava," he said mockingly, "you're not in charge anymore. You're done. Face it."
I pointed a trembling finger at him. "This isn't over, Lucas. I swear on everything I own, this isn't over."
"Oh, but it is," he said smoothly. "Enjoy your new reality."
I stumbled back to my car, my vision blurred with tears. As I drove away, my mind raced with a mix of anger, betrayal, and despair.
They thought they'd won. They thought they'd broken me.
But they were wrong. So, so wrong. This wasn't over not by a long shot.
I sped through the city like a madwoman, the streets blurring around me. My hands gripped the steering wheel so tight my knuckles were white, and my heart pounded in my chest. Tears streamed down my face, hot and relentless, but I didn't care. There was only one place I needed to be right now.

I slumped back into the chair, trying to catch my breath while my chest felt like it was being squeezed. Maxwell walked to his desk, his presence steady and calm, and pressed the intercom button.
"Marie," he said, his voice firm, "bring a coffee for Miss Alfred, please."
But I shook my head, still trembling. "Mr. Hart, coffee is the least of my worries right now," I said, my voice breaking.
Maxwell ignored me. "And arrange a meeting with Lucas. Tell him I'll see him at Alfred Enterprises tomorrow."
Marie's voice came through the intercom moments later. "Sir, the company is no longer listed as Alfred Enterprises. It's now Clarke's Enterprises."
I froze. The words hit me like a sledgehammer. My breath caught in my throat, and a scream tore from my lips. "No! No, no, no!"
I jumped to my feet, pacing the room as fresh tears streamed down my face. "Everything I've worked for! My father's legacy is gone! Just like that!"
Maxwell rushed to my side, gripping my shoulders firmly. "Ava, listen to me!" he said, his voice sharp but steady. "Breathe. You need to calm down. Crying and screaming won't fix this."
I pushed his hands away, shaking my head violently. "Don't you get it, Maxwell? They've taken everything! Everything! They even changed the name! My father built that company from scratch, and now it's gone, like it never even existed!"
Maxwell didn't flinch. He grabbed my hands, forcing me to stop pacing. "Look at me," he said, his voice softer now. "I know this feels like the end, but it's not. You're still Ava Alfred. You're still the woman who took on a boardroom full of skeptics and came out on top."
I sniffled, trying to pull myself together, but the betrayal still stung too deeply. "What's the point, Maxwell? Lucas has already won. He has the company, the name, everything."
Maxwell's eyes narrowed, a fire igniting in them. "The point is that he hasn't won. Not yet. Ava, you have something Lucas will never have; Integrity. And we're going to use that to expose him for the fraud he is."
His words hung in the air, their weight slowly sinking in. I took a deep, shaky breath, nodding slightly.
Marie entered the room cautiously, carrying a tray with coffee. "Sir," she said, glancing nervously at me. "Here's the coffee."
Maxwell gestured for her to set it down on the table. "Thank you, Marie. That'll be all."
After she left, he turned back to me. "You're not fighting this battle alone, Ava. We'll start by digging into the details fake documents, shady deals, whatever Lucas and Derek are hiding. There's always a paper trail, and I'll make sure we find it."
I sat down again, still feeling the weight of everything but grateful for Maxwell's unwavering support. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Maxwell," I whispered.
He gave me a small, reassuring smile. "You'd still fight, Ava. Because that's who you are."
