I addressed Rocco with a frosty tone. "Do you truly comprehend the gravity of your actions?"
"Absolutely," he replied without hesitation. "I'm searching for my spouse. No matter how challenging or distressing it may be, I'm undeterred. My love for you is too great."
Suddenly, as if struck by inspiration, Rocco set down the container he was holding and grinned, his expression mellowing.
"Valerie, I understand you're still upset. That's why I've brought you a present."
As he unveiled the contents of the container, dread permeated the atmosphere. Some immediately recoiled, while others succumbed to nausea, emptying their stomachs on the spot.
Within lay Avery, a horrifying shadow of her former self. She was disfigured, without limbs, her smile unnaturally wide as she repeatedly uttered the same unsettling phrases.
"The third one."
"The fourth one."
"We appreciate your business."
Rocco stroked her head with a disturbing sense of pride, his eyes gleaming as he turned to me.
