Caleb chuckled, attempting to ease the tension. “Cecilia, since you're already here, Alston really misses Gladys. A meal together isn't too much to ask, right?”
He added with a smile, “It seems like you’ve pushed Gladys all the way here. Your home is nearby, isn't it? Having a meal together won’t bother you, and you and my sister can catch up and strengthen neighborly ties.”
As Caleb spoke, he exchanged a knowing glance with Mrs. Jocelyn, who quickly caught on and said with a smile, “Miss Quinn, I’ve prepared lunch for you. I knew Caleb was coming, so I bought some fresh salmon.”
“I've been meaning to invite you over, and what better time than now?”
“Mom, Jerry and I still have things to discuss. Can we stay a bit longer before we leave?”
